Happy Storyteller Saturday! What is your favorite original character in your writing and why?
:O! This is a new one for me, thank you for the ask!
...And you're starting with such a difficult question! :))
Let's see. As far as A Sight of Aur goes, the title of "favorite" probably goes to Khloe. I mentioned before that her voice comes to me the easiest since parts of her character really do reflect my own experiences. Society at large does not love her at all, but despite her awareness of this, she continues being herself. Abrasive, introverted, but passionate about her studies and her people.
Whether she actually, truly is navigating her space in the world is a question I'm meaning to explore in the next book. (Spoiler: She is not.)
Honorable mentions to both Raphelte and Caias too. Raph's a type of scheming confidence I've had SO much fun writing, and Caias... Caias has forced me to engage with the craft in a way I really haven't before. Just for that, he'll forever have a special place in my heart.
I've got lots of special places in my heart for almost all of my characters lmao
One more special mention to a character I'm working on for a different project. In this urban paranormal fantasy, titled Ritual Girls, Sanojo is a kijin ("oni god" or "fierce deity") who's been mythologized as a "war god." Until a certain encounter pulls him free, he's been fighting a one-man war at the bottom of a well for about 500 years... but he still retains a very human softness. He's very inexpressive and to-the-point in his speech, anachronistic in his perception of the world, and he gives me such joy to write because he still has so much love to give.
Happy Saturday! 🥳
