I am so sad to say that Asperita passed away today.

Asperita was an impulse pity purchase from a chain pet store. I do not recommend this, it just increases the demand, but I was having bad hormonal swings and he was 75% off and looked so sad and scraggly. I used a coupon so he cost me $2... I couldn't stop myself. I absolutely adored this boy despite not being proud of his origins... We estimate that he was just shy of 2 years old.

He was so funny. He had 10 inches of bedding in his 4x2ft enclosure but his favorite sleep spot was on his platform behind his wheel were he carried up just enough bedding to make a little nest.

I knew he was getting older but I hadn't expected to lose him quite yet. I know I gave him as good of a life as I could.

So… Not my finest moment, but meet Asperita.

I went into a Petco for mealworms and I passed by the rodent section which had all their dwarf hamsters listed as 75% off and looking extremely pathetic… He was $5.75, and I had a $5 coupon. So I spent 75 CENTS on him… 😅 I don’t like or recommend buying from chain pet stores, and a big part of me wishes I hadn’t caved but this guy was in the worst shape out of the ones they had and it broke my heart.

He is looking better already with access to a sandbath and has been running all over his 40 gallon. He could stand to gain a little weight but will likely recover fairly well now that he’s on a higher quality diet. I estimate he’s around 6-8 months.

He just looks and acts… Frail. I have older hamsters who are much more robust than him. I hope he’ll improve with time.
