About Me

Hi, I’m Asterisk (but you can call me Aster) and this is my side blog! transmasc, he/him pronouns please! I love critters of all kinds, and I currently keep a variety of reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals. I used to keep fish years ago, but none currently.

I work for Tiny Whiskers Animal Rescue, helping rodents and other small mammals find new homes in southeast Minnesota. You can find us on instagram here.

About My Pets

My apartment is home to a rotating cast of foster rodents, the occasional foster reptile/amphibian, and my crew of permanent critters. For daily photo updates and more detailed information on everyone, check me out on instagram, same username as on here!

I am happy to answer any questions you might have about my pets, the rodent rescue, pet care in general, and so on. I am NOT a veterinarian and do not feel comfortable answering questions that are medical in nature. Any questions that I can’t answer confidently, I’ll point you in the direction of someone with more experience in that specific area!

APet (one of the main suppliers for Petco, Petsmart, and a number of smaller pet stores) got a 21 day license suspension for failure to provide veterinary care & housing animals inappropriately.

Absurdly light slap on the wrist! But remember before you buy a rodent from Petco or Petsmart remember that this is where they’re coming from.

so i reached out to someone on CL who had an accidental litter of degus… my older 3 boys are turning 8 next month and i don’t want Gadget to be lonely when they inevitably pass away in the next few years. he’s only 2. so I am hoping to adopt 2 baby boys that he can eventually bond into a trio with when his older buddies pass.

**Sora is a senior hospice rat. She is under vet supervision and she is currently able to do all of the normal rat things and still has zest for life. When her quality of life decreases, we will increase support or euthanize as appropriate. Currently, she has no issues.

Urban Tails Pet Supply is partnering with North Minneapolis Pet Resource Center to provide essential pet supplies to pet owners who are at risk due to the presence of ICE in their communities.

If you have any unopened & unexpired bags of cat/dog food, cat litter, cans of wet food, you can drop off donations at Urban Tails. You can also place a pick-up order at Urban Tails and indicate that the items are a donation!

On top of the unimaginable cruelty already happening in Minnesota, our immigrant friends and neighbors should not have to choose between their safety & their pets. As an animal rescuer, my biggest priority is helping keep pets in homes where they are loved and wanted. This is one way we can help that goal.

This is also a reminder to anyone local who may be at risk: Please make a plan with friends, family, or neighbors for your pets. Give out a spare key and tell them if they don’t hear from you every xyz days, to go and take care of your animals for you. Our community members should not need to worry about their pets on top of everything else.

In honor of Boots I have a crestie related lighting question. I just learned Canada is facing a complete CFL ban. Currently using an Arcadia 7% UVB and I'm not sure what other options exist out there for my son

Are you on facebook? If so, I’d recommend asking this question in “Reptile Lighting” they should have the most up to date information for what canadian herp keepers should do. Best of luck!

Okay it’s been a couple years since I updated so idk if you remember, but I had some shrimp that I asked for help identifying and that seem to be immortal at this point hahaha. I think last time I sent an update they were about 10 years old, and it’s about two years later now and two of them are still happy and healthy :) along with a female bristlenose pleco tank mate who has also been around for many years. I have no idea how long these shrimp will live but it’s wonderful that they’re able to live this long

Their human also is the sanctuary foster for Gaston & Baxter, who have Issues and are not adoptable.

This Giving Tuesday, please help us afford Buffy’s dermoid removal. Buffy has a dermoid in her eye that is growing hair, which is not comfortable for her. Our friend Dr Alisha at Valley View Pet Hospital can remove it AND she will keep her eye, but it’s a somewhat delicate procedure and consequently is not cheap.

We are a 501c3 rodent rescue based in Minnesota
