Roll Roofing, What Is It?
Primarily used in residential roofing applications, asphalt roll roofing products are used as underlayments and flashings and consist of four basic types of roll roofing materials, each designed for use in particular roofing jobs.
Smooth Surfaced Roll Roofing
Covered with ground talc or mica, smooth-surfaced roll roofing (also known as coated felt) is primarily used as flashing to seal the roof at any intersections and protrusions. It also provides extra deck protections at the roof's valleys and eaves.
Saturated Felt
Produced in a variety of weights, saturated felt is an organic-based felt usually used as an underlayment between roofing material and the roof deck.
Specialty-Eaves Flashings
Designed for special flashing applications along roof eaves and other areas, hence the name, is a polymer modified bituminous sheet that is self-adhering. Primarily used in regions where water backups and ice dams are commonplace.
Mineral-Surfaced Roll Roofing
With a surface embedded with mineral granules, this type of roll roofing is used alone as a primary roof covering and commonly found on small or secondary use buildings, like sheds and barns.
