*  THAT’S  NOT  AN  EASY  ANSWER,    it’s  nowhere  near  easy.   how  is  she  meant  to  put  such  things  into  words?    the  human  language  is  so  simple,   so  lacking  in  the  elegant  intricacies  other  planets  have  evolved.   there  is  no  word  that  truly  captures  loss,   no  word  for  a  childless  mother,    no  word  for  how  the  two  hearts  beating  in  her  chest  feel  like  a  betrayal.   francine,    fred,    the  human  girl  she  got  to  be  isn’t  dead  because  she  was  never  more  than  a  pleasant  daydream  created  to  give  her  time  to  recover  from  the  injuries  that  still  ache  in  her  bones.   fred  was  never  real  and  yet  she  was  so  very  real  to  the  people  she  bonded  with,    the  people  for  whom  she  sacrificed  her  existence  with  a  single  shed  tear.    a  tear  for  them  not  herself.   there’s  irony  to  that,   to  the  fact  fred’s  end  mirrored  how  her  second  incarnation  also  faded  from  existence  in  a  blur  of  golden  light  and  pained  screams.    ❝  I  am  truly  sorry.  ❞   it  hurts  more  than  she  imagined  to  look  upon  one  of  the  faces  she  still  cares  so  deeply  for,   knowing  that  to  them  she’s  no  more  than  a  stranger  wearing  the  face  of  one  of  the  dead.   and  honestly  she  can’t  argue  that  they’re  right.    if  fred  wasn’t  real  with  her  empathy  and  her  buried  hopefulness,    how  is  romana  any  more  real?   she’s  just  another  ghost  formed  out  of  nothing  more  than  memories  and  pain.

Almost like they knew they’d be there, the whole thing smells F I S H Y. Looking around for an alternate method of reaching the roof, Jess spots an open window and a sigh pushes past her lips, because of course they have to do it the H A R D way. She walks over and opens it as wide as it’ll go, then sticks her head out to look up. It’ll be fine, as long as neither of them falls to their D E A T H. Jess ducks her head back in and turns to the other.

       “ Hope you’re a decent climber. C’mon, we don’t have a lot of time. ”

                     ❛ &. ┊     It  is  an  almost  laughable  introduction  to  a  horribly  written  crime  story;  the  private  detective  and  the  special  agent,  trapped  in  a  vacant  building  with  stimulant  filled  freaks  on  the  one  side  and  an  unfortunately  deep  chasm  on  the  other.  Fingertips  still  hold  onto  the  gun  in  cool-surfaced  palms,  enough  bullets  ready  to  keep  the  attackers  at  bay  should  the  door  give  in  underneath  the  constant  hammering  of  fists  --  but  perhaps  not  to  win  the  normal,  human  way.  Eyes  follow  the  detemined  footsteps  of  Jessica  Jones  and  momentarily  flickers  regret  through  terribly  dark-coloured  eyes.  Try  Jones,  she’d  stubbornly  told  herself.  Nobody  quite  knows  how  to  dig  up  dirt  like  her.  And  she  had  known  there’d  be  a  price  to  pay  --  but  that  it  would  include  a  manhunt  in  the  middle  of  the  night,  she  really  would  not  have  expected.  

“  Always  preferred  mountain-climbing.  ”  A  useless  remark.  Another  brief  gaze  cast  onto  the  shivering  door  and  she  follows  suit  as  her  counterpart  leads  the  way  out  the  opened  window.  The  gun  is  tightly  placed  in  her  holster,  hands  instinctively  picking  a  tie  from  around  her  wrist  to  keep  stubborn  hair  from  falling  into  her  face  on  the  way  up.  But  if  it’s  the  only  way  out,  her  attitude  won’t  change  much  --  and  the  last  she  wants  is  an  eyewitness  when  she,  temporarily,  dies  only  to  get  back  up  briefly  after.  “  How  far  up  do  we  have  to  go?  ”

- her father loved music, so he taught her to read sheet music and play piano. her mother was classically trained vocally, and taught her a thing or two. hope used to perform in musicals as a teenager and still loves them to this day - she may not have time to be in them anymore, but she is a loyal patron of the arts. she has a strong voice, mezzo-soprano. it’s a talent she whips out during nights out to karaoke bars. besides that, if her hands are busy kneading a pile of dough she’s most likely singing quietly to herself or belting along to music she’s blasting from a nearby speaker. - any movie she connects to childhood comfort will easily reduce her to tears. think it’ll be a cute date idea to snuggle up on the couch and watch a disney movie ? nope ! you’ll end up having to console a sniveling hope who isn’t emotionally stable enough to listen to ❝ feed the birds ❞ from mary poppins. ( a song her mother sang to her as a lullaby when she was little. )- her father’s nickname for her growing up was ❝ cupcake.❞ it’s the first thing her mother taught her to bake - and to this day, she’ll say they are her favorite food. this is not a coincidence.

Polina has run this bakery for more than twenty years. She's used to dealing with the hooligans who come from the orphanage in town -- rowdy children who show up with a scorunging together of coins for whatever they can get. One night, as she's locking up, she catches a young girl rummaging through the trash, looking through for the baked goods that could not be sold that day. In a way, Polina finds her clever but still shoos her away.

Two weeks later, the girl is back again. Earlier though, as Polina is taking out the unsold goods. The child cannot be more than five years old, with mismatched shoes and holes in the knees of her leggings. The food would go to waste anyway, so she hands the girl a piece of cake and ushers her on her way. 

For the next few years, it is a regular occurence. The girl shows up, waits patiently, does not speak even when Polina asks her her name, asks if she has anyone to look after her. Eventually she stops asking, and just starts talking -- complaining about her own children, full-grown who have moved away and never call. The girl listens, eats her treat, and Polina wishes her a good night.

Sometime later, the girl begins to show up in the morning. Again, Polina shoos her away. "You know the rules, at the end of the day only. Don't you have school to go to?" She notices the girl has grown a bit. The clothes that were once baggy on her frame are now quite small. Such is the life over at the orphanage, she supposed. But it makes her realize just how long this girl has been coming by.

Two months later, she gets the morning visit again. Even if the sun had risen, the day was dark and dreary. Rain poured in steady sheets from the sky and there she was again.

"You think you can come here looking like a drowned rat and I will break the rules for you?" Polina said. "Well it is working, come in before you catch your death out there."

Polina takes the soaking coat and hangs it near the ovens for the heat to dry it out. Having her in the kitchen does not prove to be much trouble at all. The girl mills about, looking at everything, watching curiously as Polina starts the day's work. But at some point she needs to keep her out of the way. She sits her down with a cup of tea and a fresh muffin from the first batch of the day. "You know you have sad eyes and a pretty face," Polina tuts. "You're very lucky. You're going to convince a lot of people to do favors for you."

The girl smirks awkwardly around a mouthful of muffin, and Polina realizes the girl has known this for quite some time. Clever little devil. The day starts to lighten, and she goes to grab the reasonably drier coat. "Come. You have school to get to," Polina said, taking note of the name scribbled on the tag inside  -- Faina. 

As Polina readies the shop to open for the day, she thinks that perhaps she could start to teach the girl a few things about baking -- perhaps let her help around in turn for the baked treats. But she never gets a chance to make the offer. Faina never returns to the shop again. Polina assumes, of course, that the girl has been adopted. Good. The girl deserves a nice home.
