Sitting down at her desk Liliana pulled out a scrapbook and she smiled. She slowly began to flip through it just looking at her past. She found a few of her favorite photos of her and her father and she smiled. He truly was an amazing man. She hadn't heard from him in a few days so she made a mental note to call him later. Flipping through the photographs she found a few from her first job. It wasn't anything glamorous but it was fun. She worked at a gaming store. Some of the photos were of her and the friends she made and some were just her whenever her dad came in to 'spy' on her to make sure she still had the job.

Thinking back on the job she had to smile. It was definitely fun. While she went in knowing some about a few games it was definitely a learning experience. She had a lot of fun though. Learning had never been fun until she'd started working there. They showed her how to have fun learning and slowly she began applying the techniques she was learning at school and it helped improve her grades. Her three years working there were some of the best and worst experiences of her life. She met some really amazing people that she's still friends with today there. Continuing to look through those work photos she couldn't help but smile because they made her happy.

Thinking back to that she thought about the day she turned in her two weeks notice. They gave her someone to train and she had the girl trained in time that they let her leave early. She hated leaving that job but at the same time she knew it was time. She had some money saved up and she was more than willing to work somewhere else to make her way. That was one of the best experiences in  her life and she knew it. Thinking back on those experiences she knew she should really go back there and see how the place was. A small smile graced her lips at the thought. She missed that place, not enough to go back to work there but enough to see how it was holding up.

Photo a Friend Instructions: 1. Find a friend (define friend however you want) 2. Take a formal photographic portrait of them 3. Upload 4. Extra credit: Also upload a pic of a post-it saying what a real friend is and then send it to Tanja.

     Here we have two photo's taken of my two oldest friends, the only people I have contact with from high school. Both were friends I had who went to a different school than me. They were from an important part of my life when I realised you don't have to pick from the limited supply of people who just happen to live near you to be your friends. Its ok if your friends live 30 min (or more) away... also its ok if they are Guys.  (Which was a good thing to learn because now they are both 2.5 hours from me...)

     Friends have always been hard for me. I don't make them easily. I am this strange mixture of introvert / extrovert. I don't think I really fit well in iver category... around extroverts I seem introverted around introverts I am extroverted... I do feel much more comfortable in small groups though. I also have found that I am a lot less intimidated by guys than girls... it has often felt to me that girls expect me to be different than I am. As often as not they are ok with me once they start to see me, but I feel that it can take some girls longer to see me as apposed to what they expect to see.

   Andrew and Bella the dog are in the first photo. I stayed at Andrews house for the weekend which was fun. Got to get to know his girlfriend a lot better and discovered that I really wish I had know her in high school, would have made things a lot more fun (as much fun as I had with "the guys"... it would have been nice). The two puppies Bella and Charlie are hers and very cute.  (Side note: The photos of pocket watches above Andrews head were taken by him... In my head Photography represents Andrew... he dose lots of other stuff... but he seemed so happy to me when he was able to do that at collage).

    Ryan and Miley are the second photo. Miley is also Ryan's girlfriends dog, who was at work when we came over to play car games and take a photo so I didn't get the chance to hang out with her any more than the limited time we had at a con last year.

    I intended to bring post it notes but forgot them... so me and Andrew wrote on que-cards...

    Also here's a video from the creation... because I have a video camera now and like the idea of Creation videos (even if am not sure anymore that I like editing)!

Why take this photo?

Well because they are my friends. But not only that. It’s because they are what I think is the true embodiment of friends to me. I am not saying that I don’t have many amazing friends, or that they are better friends than any of my wonderful and amazing friends I have. But that they are what I see as the perfect definition of a friend.

Let me explain, this two, who are known affectionately as Emprise (Nee) and Windrunner. They live in Ottawa, Ontario. I live in Toronto, Ontario. I traveled all that way by train just to see them for the weekend. We hung out played games, and took this photos. So even thought they live so far away, we have been able to retain are friendship at an almost constant level. It has never wavered. Not once.

Now this is not to say everything is perfect. We all have are time of not being the best friend to one another or forgetting something that was really important to the other. Or just needing space from a person once in a while. But it does not matter what all three of us have gone through we have always remained friends.

A friend to me is someone who I can see a few times and then not see for a year. And then see them again and we click back together like no time has even past. This is what Windrunner and Emprise mean to me.

Now by now you must be wondering why is the photo of a cat and a wolf? Well because that is who they are. And who I see them as. Of course there are human, but everyone has a bit of animal in them. And my friends just like to show it off in a more creative way. Another great reason they are my friends. They are not afraid to show off their wild side!

Whimper

I saw the best minds of my generation made complacent, lulled by access to information into disinterest in acquiring it and taught implicitly that to be right is to be the same as everyone else is to be safe, running like lemmings off of cliffs because the lemmings in front of them did it first

who refused to be taught chess openings because they wanted to come up with the openings themselves

who cried when asked to choose a favorite color because they didn’t want any of the other colors to feel bad

who have forgotten all of the letters to their individual alphabets, deemed unfit for preschool assignments

who were not allowed to paint their nails because the other boys would make fun of them

who were taught to the test which has no imagination

who split their dessert by halves, quarters, eighths to share and nearly caused a riot when it couldn’t be split anymore

who read novels behind their music stands during band practice between clarinet whole notes

who planned political movements with grand historical allusions and without pants

who lie about their favorite color because it’s easier than explaining that it depends on the day and they’d rather not pick one anyway because they don’t want the other colors to feel bad

who were not left behind by the school system but were dragged through it by their feet, coughing up dust and bumping their heads on rocks as they passed

who sat up long into the night discussing politics and religion and favorite children’s books

who combed through massive tomes to pick the very best university with the simultaneous knowledge that this decision didn’t matter all that much and that it was the most important decision of their entire lives thus far

who didn’t get into the college of their dreams

who got into the college of their dreams and couldn’t afford to go there and stayed home and went to a local school instead

who went to the college of their dreams and failed because they were lazy and afraid of failure and did not yet understand the meaning of consequences

who are trapped in a capitalist system they no longer agree with by college debt they were never given the option not to take

who don’t remember the last thing they read that wasn’t assigned

who get their news from 95.5 PLJ

who hide behind rules and inconvenience and youth

who get discouraged by their ignorance and retreat into ignorance

who were never asked for more than the bare minimum, and so, never give it

who are waiting to be told what to rebel for

Assignment #15 Part c

1. -One in four Americans ages 16 to 19 were unemployed in February.

-The teen jobless rate climbed from 23.2 to 23.8 percent.

-According to a 1995 National Bureau of Economic Research working paper, high school seniors employed 20 hours per week were, 6 to 9 years later, expected to earn approximately 11 percent more annually than their counterparts who did not work.

 -The February unemployment rate for Hispanics age 16 to 19 was 27.5 percent.

-The February unemployment rate for African Americans ages 16 to 19 was more than one-third, at 34.7 percent.

-The national teen unemployment rate has been above 20 percent since mid-2008.

Although this isn't necessarily shocking, I find it really upsetting. I would assume that during a recession, less teens would be employed since jobs become harder to get and therefore most of them are filled with overqualified adults, yet it is really sad because jobs and experience are necessary for teens. It is also sad that it has maintained this way for so many years. Hopefully in the future things will get better and the unemployment rate will decrease.

2. Some effects of teen unemployment are less experience in professional spaces, less earnings in the future compared to a teen who was employed, and less responsible. 

3. "One way to ensure work for America's young people is to keep the minimum wage low, says Michael Saltsman, a research fellow at the Employment Policies Institute..."

"boosting teen employment may simply be question of getting more people back to work overall."

"Increasing the minimum wage, she says, tends to get money into the hands of people who really need it, and are more likely to spend it. 'It actually increases economic activity and generates some jobs...'”

This article is a hit of reality. Although it sucks, it's the way it is, especially as finding jobs as an adult is so difficult. Hopefully things will turn around and people of all ages will be able to find jobs when they need them, but as of now, if your'e a teen, it is very tough.

Assignment #15 Part b

1. The economic situation in Panem is unusual because despite its post-apocalyptic condition, it is quite technologically advanced. "It has high-speed trains, hovercrafts, extraordinary genetic engineering capabilities, and the ability to create extremely advanced weapons." Still, with all of this, it is a society of tremendous economic inequality, with deprivation and famine. 

2. Economic theory says prosperity comes from technology and capital accumulation. Technology allows the creation of new products, and therefor the cheaper sales of older products (EX: the first ipod compared to the latest one). Then, an increase in capital allows an increase in production and so on. The cycle of the economic theory is also effected because of supply and demand.

3. Panem is both so poor and so rich in knowledge because of the reversal of fortune. “If you plot per capita income in the Americas today, you see a clear pattern with the United States and Canada ahead, the southern cone around Chile and Argentina in second place, and the middle portion much poorer. It turns out that if you turn the clock back about 500 years, the pattern was reversed. The places that are rich today were poor then, while those that are poor today were generally rich in the past.” They have gained knowledge because of past experiences, yet they now are very poor. 

4. The reversal of fortune is when places that were rich in the past are poor today and vice versa. Basically, it is when they switch, or reverse roles. 

5. The problems with an economy built on primary sector industries is that advancing is difficult and resources may run out.

Assignment #15 Part a

-We use 20% of the world's oil, even if we drilled every square inch of this country we'd still on have 2% or 3% of the world's oil reserves.

-Prices are rising now because a major oil supplier is the Middle East, and the oil comes through Iran. With growing tensions, Iran could stop our supply, and prices would soar.  Because of this, investors are buying up oil to profit off our dependency on it, and in turn prices are higher. 

I think that issues revolving around things such as oil are highly controversial. It is really hard to place blame and find solutions. I think it depends on so many factors and it is hard to work out the resources. Because of this,  I don't think gas prices are directly Obama's fault.
