Assignment 3 work in progress
Just one of the three bas-relief Iām working on so far.
Ly, C. (2020). āAsk Me Anythingā Vaporwave Zine. Here it is, one week late, the result of my blood, sweat and tears. My Vaporwave zine. I ran into problem after problem trying to put this together but at long last, itās done and Iām relatively happy with how it turned out. Of course, I canāt help but compare myself to my peers - their work was amazing and this doesnāt even come close to being as good as the work of some others. Nonetheless I did my best and Iām just glad itās over. This zine was fun to do but oh boy was it stressful. I started out planning to do a video. Iād compiled all my assets and spent weeks watching tutorials trying to figure out how people did some of the intricate glitch effects on their photos. I even learnt how to code so I could create aĀ āvoiceā for my character - he was supposed to speak in Animalese (like Animal Crossing characters). But after weeks of experimenting, frustration and Adobe After Effects crashes, it just wasnāt going to work out.Ā Luckily, the knowledge Iād learnt from the tutorials was easily transferable to Photoshop, which is where I did the bulk of the zine.Ā For the intendedĀ ļ½ļ½ ļ½ļ½ļ½ļ½ ļ½ļ½ļ½, there were some rules that I set for myself in order to successfully emulate the feeling and message that vaporwave usually delivers. I didnāt limit my colour palette, but I ensured that blues and purples were the main colour scheme throughout. To emulate the mocking of consumerism, I ironically included many well known consumer brands, including the likes of Coca Cola, Nintendo and Fiji water. Itās also in vaporwaves name to work under aliases and not give credit to people, so I redacted all real-life name mentions throughout the zine.Ā As the zine progressed the pages would get less and less serious before ending on the error screen-like bibliography. If anyone bothers to translate the Japanese, it also get more and more crude in the later pages.Ā All in all, I just wish I planned to do a still zine from the beginning. Given that a video format might have been cool, it was way too ambitious of a goal given the limited time frame and my non-existent video editing skills in After Effects. However, Iām glad that I did spend the time to learn the basics as I now have really solid foundation for when Iām ready to finally properly learn how to use the program. This semester has been a fun exercise in creativity and the zine was the perfect way to end everything off!Ā
Assignment 3 progress
How the website layout looks like for now. I still have to include the last two questions before class next week. Progress is kind of slow since I was originally planning to make a video but it was not working out for me. Shayna made sure I have plan B so I decided to just make a website last minute but honestly Iām quite liking how this looks. Let me know what you guys think!

Desire
Desire and auction, clear ādisplay boxesā holding items people desire. We auction them off still in the boxes. Desire is about wanting something and Continuing to want something thatās why the boxes are sealed. They can have it but they never really get it
Cynthia Morris Sherman, who is known by, Cindy Sherman, is the owner of the original photograph. Throughout her work, Sherman was concerned with examining the way women are perceived by society in the modern world. This photograph is one of the photographs in her series which called āUntitled Film Stillsā in which she created over a hundred publicity shots reminiscent of scenes from old B movies. Sherman was not only a photographer, but also a director, makeup artist, hairstylist, wardrobe mistress, and a model of almost all the seriesā. The thing is that people categorized her work as self-portraits; however, she has not done a portrait of anybody, instead, they were all imaginary creatures. In denying her own identity she also captured something of the times.
Cindy Shermanās Untitled Film Still #21 is one of a series of 69 black and white images taken by the photographer between 1977 and 1980. The first six pictures were conceived as a group for which she impersonated a single actress playing different roles at various points in an imagined career. What was initially an experiment growing into an expansive survey of feminine roles based on film imagery from the 50s and 60s. Ā Some, like Still #21 are taken outside but in the main they are taken in interiors carefully prepared and taken by the photographer. At first glance they appear to be from movies that we believe we may have seen and the roles that Sherman adopts are wide and varied. In Untitled Film Still #21 she plays the role of the working girl in the big city. Through the series she portrayed women as passive, seductive, vulnerable, a victim, a housewife or a hooker.
I used to believe that copying a photograph might be the easiest thing in photography, but after trying to copy Shermanās photograph, I realized that it is not easy at all, and that it requires noticing the smallest details in order to be able to copy them because they actually matter. Concerning the outfit, it was really hard to find a chemise with this large collar in the original photograph, so I actually used kitchen napkins and designed it in a way that looks like the collar in the original photograph. Choosing the outfit and being creative about using the reachable materials were the second interesting task in this assignment. For me the first interesting thing was discovering the photograph and actually copying every single detail of it. Personally, I used think that copying was dull, but I found that it takes a lot of time and effort.
This photograph is called untiled film still #21.
