Exercise 5.6: Stages of Reading Development. Part III (First illustration & development)
Scary and the animal is a shark.
Drawing
A3 Gouache
I have been using Gouache for a few drawings and I love it but I am not sure how it behaves, so I have a lot of problems trying to create layers and shadows.
I love the colour and the way the gouache pop up in the page but I am not sure I know exactly how to work with it properly yet.
Inspiration
I came up with the idea of a sark for the scary concept (see pic above) and I think it works well. I wanted to be related with a more older child, around pre-schooler or early reader)
I also decided on a page with different scenes building up to the bite to really communicate the concept and I develop the first part of the page.
Illustration
I think it works well and the combination of colour is great. I am really happy about this but unfortunately, I think I need more skills using gouache. I also realise that I did not know how the water behaves and I might have drawn a low deep part of the sea rather than the deep ocean. I took a different illustration of water and I settle for this but I later realise that does not represent the deep sea.
Age
I am not sure if this is too subtle by a Pre-schooler but I think it is appropriate for an Early reader. I think the whole page can be read and understand but an Early reader. I was worry that I was going to be too scary for a small child but I asked a few mothers and they think it is not too much but I would like to do more research on the topic.
