An example lesson plan using the ASSURE Model. Very good!
Teacher Reflection-ASSURE
Analyze Learners
First, the teacher must look at the learners that make up the classroom population.
I think it is extremely important to have a clear understanding of the types of learners that are included within the classroom. Therefore, when the planning process begins, the teacher will be able to integrate technology and strategies that will ensure that each learner can reach their highest potential.
Within my classroom, I make it a point to meet with each student at the beginning of the school year. This allows me to get to know each student as an individual and get to know the strategies that they feel help them succeed. We also talk about their experience with technology and what they have used in past classes. At the sixth grade level, I believe that students have a strong understanding of how they learn and what they feel works. Therefore, I want to make sure that their voice is heard and that I am listening to what they have to say in regards to their education.
State Objectives
Within this component, the teacher must clearly state what they want their students to learn throughout the lesson. It is very important that these objectives are clearly understood by the learner before the start of the lesson.
Within my classroom, as we begin a lesson, I always have the objectives clearly stated on a board for the students to see. By doing so, throughout the lesson, my students always have the opportunity to reference these objectives and be reminded of the goals that have been set.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials
This component of the ASSURE model is where the teacher will select the instructional strategies that will be used and the materials that will help reach the learning objectives.
After figuring out the learning objectives, I then decide what my lesson will look like. I decide how I will begin the lesson and at what point my students will take the lead and begin their small group work to help better understand the topic. Also, I come up with a plan about what technology I want to use and when it will be the most beneficial to help further the learning and understanding.
Utilize Technology, Media, and Materials
The appropriate technology must be used to help students reach the learning objectives. Through technology and the selected materials, the teacher must find a way to implement these tools in a way that creates a learning environment that stimulates growth and mastery of the selected content.
Before carrying out a lesson, I always figure out the type of technology that I will be using. If the technology is new to me, I practice using it as if I was both a teacher and student. This allows me to answer any questions that my students might have along the way. I also make sure that the technology is working to prevent any delays in my instruction.
Require Learner Participation
It is very important that each student is actively engaged within each aspect of the lesson. This includes group and small group discussions, activities, and assessments. This step in the ASSURE model requires prior planning because the teacher needs to develop a clear outline of how their students will learn the required information.
Before beginning any lesson, I believe it is extremely important to know exactly how to engage students in the learning process. I figure out if I want my students to learn the information through small group or whole group work, what activities will be implemented, any the type of assessment I will use to ensure that the objectives have been met.
Evaluate and Revise
This is a very important step. The teacher must analyze what worked throughout the lesson and what didn’t work and then continue to make adjustments to further meet the needs of each student.
Within my classroom, I believe that reflection is extremely important. As I continue to strive to provide the best education for my students, I need to stop and analyze each aspect of the lesson, while listening to the feedback my students provide. By taking a step back, I am able to look at the strategies that have been implemented, the strategies used, and the instructional tools.
Since many students are not all alike, some are visual learners, some learn from reading and others learn through listening, it is important that an educator be creative in order to stimulate that student’s desire to learn.
By using the ASSURE Model, it helps us assure that our students will understand and correctly apply copyright rules.
This a great resource showing the complete breakdown of implementing the Assure Model for a lesson on copyright rules. Take a walk through the planning process with school librarian, Regan Michelle.
It's about the learners and the important decisions we make as designers and instructors to ensure successful learning opportunities.
Sharon Smaldino, talking about the ASSURE model
“ASSURE is an instructional design model that has the goal of producing more effective teaching and learning” (Forrest 2015).

ASSURE MODEL QUEST
It is a little difficult to go on an adventure when you don’t have a set quest in front of you! Today, we are going to go on a journey to see what we can really figure out about the ASSURE MODEL.
Below is a link to a webquest that walks us through the different aspects of the ASSURE MODEL and provides us with resources to help navigate through each part.

The ASSURE model provides a learning environment that looks at each student as an individual learner. The teacher must first identify the needs of each student and then clearly list the expectations of the learner throughout the instruction. Once the objectives have been clearly outlined, appropriate materials, technology, and instructional strategies should be carefully picked. These materials will work towards meeting the learning objectives that have already been established. The materials that have been selected will then be utilized in a way that best prepares the students for success. This includes a full preparation of each material as it works towards achieving the objectives. Next, the teacher must decide how students will be engaged. This takes in to account the materials selected and learning objectives. Lastly, the teacher will evaluate the level of success throughout the lesson. During this step, the students will be given the opportunity to share their thoughts about the lesson and what they took away.
