I really like this movie. The way they changed the story was awesome and it is the modern Disney fairytale film that I think harkens back the most to the successful films of the 80/90s.
Rapunzel is a fun, interesting, and entertaining protagonist. Like I have said before, she has multiple aspects to her personality other than being awkward- unlike a new princess- and she has actual motives to do something, so you understand her need to leave and go outside. Eugene is one of my favorite princes of all time. . He's funny, sarcastic, and he goes through the most change throughout the entire film. I really like his character, he's probably my favorite in the film. Gothel is an awesome villain, and they did a great job portraying her ways of villainy- it's not straight-up obvious evil, but it's definitely evil.
The side characters felt really tacked on and unneeded, but at least Maximus did something... Pascal was just there to be cute, and I can't stand those kind of characters. I didn't really connect with any of the characters, though, and that can be a bit of a problem- I think that's why I like movies like BH6 and Lilo and Stitch, there's a lot of individual and group character bonding- but I still connected to them enough.
The romance is great and, although the two recorded separately, Rapunzel and Eugene have a great chemistry, although their voices are a bit too celebrity-sounding to suck me in as much, but I can ignore that. They're sweet, and one of the most real Disney couples I've seen. They have multiple scenes when they just sit down and talk, and that's extremely important. They just sweet, what can I say? The animation is gorgeous, although Disney has improved since, and it shows in BH6. I can see why this remains to be the most expensive Disney animated film ever made. It has so many details, Rapunzel's hair is animated very well, and it all looks beautiful and the environments and backgrounds have to much detail... unlike a certain snowy movie that plain backdrops. Even if you don't like the characters and the story, it's wonderful to look at.
The songs are... meh. I don't like the style, but at least they stuck to a style throughout the whole movie and didn't change it around or trick you. For what they are, they're good. They're fun and catchy, and I won't complain. I See the Light is one of the great Disney love songs, and tells a lot about the characters and their emotional journey. The singing itself? Oh boy... Zachary Levi was fine, but didn't have a lot of emotion in his singing performance, but Mandy Moore was awful. She slurred her words, connected them, had bad technique, and couldn't sing half of the high notes that were required for the songs. No wonder Menkin, one of the best song writers, had to rewrite everything! They needed a new singer or voice actor overall, because her voice ruined things for me. At least she was okay in I See the Light. The transitions are pretty well done, but the first Mother Knows Best was a bit clunky, but the reprise was done perfectly. They probably should have had an extra song near the end, but I understand why they didn't because of the pacing, which is done very well until the very end, and I was a bit annoyed that they started and ended with narration, but I understand why, so it didn't take anything away from the film. I didn't like that they ended on the old guy floating.. what the heck? Seriously, why.
All in all, this is definitely one of my favorite Disney movies. Top ten, at least. It marked the return and rise of Disney Animation after the late 90s and early 2000s. This movie didn't bring anything new like Wreck-It Ralph or Big Hero 6, but that's not a negative and it was extremely enjoyable. Although it's not my favorite because it didn't connect me too much emotionally and had some problems within the songs, I love this movie.
