Assy McGee #6: “Conviction” | January 7, 2007 - 11:30PM | S01E06

It’s the season finale! Assy unwittingly becomes the posterboy for Conviction cologne while working as a security guard for a photoshoot. His celebrity gets him into a trendy nightclub where he finds out that Conviction also doubles as a smokeable narcotic that is ravaging the city streets, and that the church is behind it all, additionally profiting off of government assistance for their recovery centers.

This one starts a little weak, but actually picks up in the second half. The end of it is more satisfying than anything else in the episode, which doesn’t always happen with this show. Assy hijacks a baby being baptized in what appears to be a two-can-play-at-this-game response to a priest who happens to be baptizing the little guy while Assy busts in with a gun. Turns out Assy’s plan was to put the gun in the baby’s hands so it’ll clumsily pull the trigger and kill the evil bishop. The baby is awarded the key to the city. When Assy’s chief asks him why the baby, Assy responds “I thought it would be funny”. That is so hilarious.

This one takes a while to get off the runway, but there are still a couple episodes I’d say are worse than this one. Season one was much closer to being exactly half good and half bad than I realized, but at the time this show was so hated that I felt the need to champion it. Bring on season two, I remember almost nothing from it.

Oh my god. Yeah. In a weird way, I sorta am, because I gave up on that show midway through and there are episodes I’ve never seen. Also I’ll feel no remorse for writing quick dismissive write-ups for it, which can be rather valuable for me when I’m light on time.
