They’re laying in Florence’s bed, El’s cobalt blues studying pale features as they discuss their high school experiences. Eleanor’s had consisted mainly of nothing. Nothing worth remembering, anyway; the memories seemed so far away now, it was hard to know that she had a life pre-zombie, pre-shit storm. Then again, life hadn’t been so dandy before the apocalypse either. Figures, she thinks. Two terrible lives, all for the price of one. 

The older blonde returns her focus to Florence’s story about the Pass Christian spring fling, and for a moment, she’s envious. A sad sort of jealously knotting in her belly as she remembers her own teenage years, which were far less spectacular. The most excitement she had was Sunday dinner and a lemon icebox pie during Potlucks. A familiar voice echos in the back of her head, reminding her that’s her fault. Willow always had a way of getting to her, even now. 

A shiver runs down Eleanor’s spine and she scooches closer to her friend, an attempt to leave thoughts of her ex behind. Easier said than done. Instead, she focuses on the sight before her, a beautiful one, she would quite easily admit and her hand lifts to her friend’s cheek, cradling it carefully, as if she were porcelain. She seemed too breakable, perhaps though the next gust of wind would knock her over, leaving her shattered. Maybe that was just her.   

The words leave her mouth quickly, an abrupt “I love you!”as she realized just how mortal they both were. But the words run together, warped by her urgency to get them out. The actress sits up and tries again, pulling the other with her. “I love you–” A moment passes and the corners of El’s lips turn up into a small smile.“I love you, Flo... And I need you to stay safe, okay?” I’ve already lost too much. She doesn’t consider how random her sudden declaration may seem to Florence, she just leans in, pressing their foreheads together. 

“Just stay safe for me, yeah?”

Lips pursing, the man did his absolute best to suppress the nerves slowly rising up in his throat. Long nights were spent trading and hunting around Cheyenne for the ingredients, or for all but one ingredients that he figured would be alright to substitute. Phirni didn’t seem like the hardest thing to make, but the only time he had seen it made was on the few times when his grandmother came to visit pre end of the world. As the hours slipped by approaching his date with Nami, the recipe and preparation only seemed to get more and more muddled.

He had to admit, he didn’t need to be an expert to know that it did not look right, the funny look on her face giving him no reason to believe otherwise. “Here, I’ll take the first bite to show you that it’s not poisoned alright?” With a reassuring smile ( more for himself than Nami ), Vik opened his mouth for the spoonful that she was offering him. The first thing that he noticed was the sweetness, and then he was coughing it back up, the taste absolutely putrid on his palette.

Nami’s eyes flooded with concern, her lips forming what seemed to instructions, but with violent coughing fit, nothing made sense other than the cup of water that was being passed to him. He didn’t need another suggestion, taking the glass and choking it down until he was able to successfully look at her with a lopsided smile. “Good stuff right there. Go on. Try some.”

The two were both out of their minds drunk. With bottles in their hands, the two had drank away all of the fury and sadness over their failed relationships. Neither could quite get it right; both too broken and too unstable to be with anyone but each other. But even their friendship was built on a dark base of blood and bone, there was nothing pure in their veins anymore. They both carried the same darkness in them, but even just being near the small blonde seemed to relinquish some of it. In this moment, he even felt slightly giddy. The thought that he and Skylar were forever over was hilarious, and of course his best friend had to be broken up with by the big Irishman within the same day. And now? Now they were dancing, dancing with tears in their eyes and booze sloshing from their bottles.

Happy, happy, happy. The words seemed so foreign to his tongue as he spun the woman around and around and around. This was the apocalypse after all, and whatever happiness he could, as fake as this may have been. Lorenzo needed something to temporarily fill the void until he could process it all when he was better prepared, if there even was such a time. They just continued to laugh and spin, hysterical screams of laughter erupting from their lips as the song switched to something far too ironic to ignore. Yelling out the lyrics to the song, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Lorenzo let out a soft laugh before letting go of her hands and taking another large sip from the bottle.

Looking over at Aster, he could clearly see the same broken expression that he bore. His hands reached out to gently take hers into his own before he pulled her back into his embrace. They always seemed to come back to this, finding their way back into each others arms. Whether beaten and battered or torn to pieces with a broken heart, the two would find a way to pick all of the shatters back up and rearrange them until they reassembled into something that looked somewhat like their former selves. It wasn’t perfect, but for now, it was enough.

Soft light trickled through the battered curtains as Eden lifted her head slightly to turn and look at the warm body next to her. A shy smile tugged at her lips as the blonde curled into her body more, if that were even possible with Jihan’s arm already holding her tightly against herself as if she would float away without that extra security. It wasn’t a far cry from the truth however. As secure and happy as Eden was in this moment, there was always that small voice in the back of her head telling her that this was wrong, wrong, wrong. Beautiful little sins had been committed in this warm bed of theirs. Evidence of her crimes littered the other woman’s body as she lay there sleeping. It was her own personal Hell, but her Father had never told her that Hell would be this beautiful.

Maybe she was just being weak and falling for the forbidden apple yet again, but nothing about the woman holding her screamed anything but kindness. She could try and pretend as if she didn’t see it coming or as if she had a choice, but the blonde knew that was never the case. The bashful smiles, discreet flirtations, stolen glances: she had noticed them all, and it had only sucked her in more to the enchanting woman beside her. It was terrifying but beautiful all the same, and for once in her life, Eden felt special. She wasn’t just some dumb hick to Jihan, and yes, maybe they fought constantly about her beliefs. She knew that Jihan couldn’t stand it when she would so firmly defend her father’s heinous beliefs. The brunette knew exactly how to get under her skin, and Eden hated it. She hated losing control over her composure, but she couldn’t help but realize that in a way, Jihan was making her better.

When the other girl’s hand began to gently graze across the exposed skin of her back, Eden’s face flushed slightly with memories of the prior night flashing into the back of her mind. Her eyes grazed over the other woman’s bare back where her lips had written sweet eulogies not long ago. With hands clutching at one another, she swore she had never felt anything more holy. This was unlike any sort of sermon that she had ever bore witness too in the past. This time it was no longer her worshiping an incorporeal being in the sky, but rather her lips paying their dues to a girl who made her see God.

Shaking herself out of it, Eden tried her best to calm the blush that was rising on her face. The blonde tried her best to slide out from under the brunette’s arm only to see her eyes quickly open, a look of fear flooding her features. All Eden could do was smile sleeply at her before shifting over so that she was lying across the other girl’s back. She wouldn’t admit it, not yet at least, but she was just as terrified. Jihan could leave her in shambles whenever she liked. The power was in her hands, and all Eden could do was try with all her might to cling onto her and pray that she didn’t come to realize the chaos inside her that everyone else liked to so clearly point out. A small grumble of some sort about her being too big was heard only prompting Eden to sit up just enough to place a small peck onto her shoulder blade before rolling off again. “Good mornin’ to you too.”

Hands gripping waist, Lorenzo pulled the blonde in tight as far away from the door as possible. Trouble never failed to follow like a shadow. This time it just happened to be that a herd of walkers was passing by. The room around him seemed to be closing in on the two as he stood clutching at her body, silently telling himself that it would all be over in a short while. But with each breath he took, the air got thinner and thinner. His lungs were collapsing in on him, his head practically bursting as he pleaded with himself to forget about the size of the room.

Death was inevitable, but he wouldn’t allow it to be imminent. It was all in his head. He knew it was, and by the time he had made this realization, the thundering sounds of his heavy breathing and the dragging of walker’s making their way down the hallway faded. His eyes unclenched, prying themselves open until he was able to finally look down at the woman in his arms. A gentle hand was placed against his cheek, silently begging him to calm down and come back to earth with her. They were alive, and they were okay.

It was always like this with them. A constant need to remind each other – him – that they were safe and out of harm’s way. There were never many words shared between them; their story had risen from silence. But that was not to say that it took away from what it meant to him. She was a constant that he could depend on to never waver and never drift away no matter how dark he became. That was something that he couldn’t say about most, and in the midst of all this darkness, she had become his beam of light.
