What if you don't relate to your Rising Sign? Meet your Chart Ruler

A lot of people don't identify with their ascendant. That's okay. And it might be because their Chart Ruler is steering their chart in a different direction.

The chart ruler is the planet that rules your rising sign (or ascendant). It tells you the moves you make in the world, underneath the style of your Rising.

Aries: Mars

Taurus: Venus

Gemini: Mercury

Cancer: Moon

Leo: Sun

Virgo: Mercury

Libra: Venus

Scorpio: Mars (and kinda Pluto)

Sagittarius: Jupiter

Capricorn: Saturn

Aquarius: Saturn (and kinda Uranus)

Pisces: Jupiter (and kinda Neptune)

(There's a lot of back-and-forth about traditional vs. modern rulerships, but that matters less for this post. We're going to go with mostly traditional, with modern rulers added on for a little flavor.)

Important Distinction

The Ascendant is the filter, the style, interface. It's how you move.

The Chart Ruler is the driver, the body, the animating part. It's the moves you make.

If your Ascendant is your "mask", the Chart Ruler is the person who picked it out.

The Ascendant might describe how you initiate your approach, but the Chart Ruler describes what you're actually trying to do.

Some Examples

You're a Taurus Rising but you feel restless, sharp and intense -- not slow, methodical and grounded? Check out where your Venus is in your chart -- it might be in Aries. If so, your moves might be careful, but the actions they take are a lot more intense than your Taurus Rising gives you credit for.

If you're a Aries Rising but you feel quiet, structured and methodical in your heart instead of brash and confrontational, check out your Mars placement. It might be in Capricorn. (In which case, congratulations, your Mars is exhalted.) You have a lot more stamina, forethought and resilience than your Aries Rising says you do.

If you're a Scorpio Rising but you're charming, bubbly and maybe a little bit scattered, maybe your Mars is in Gemini. That will change how your Scorpio tone plays out in lived reality. The Ascendant is the hypothetical approach -- all else equal, how do you approach life compared to a different Sign on the horizon? The Chart Ruler is the actual reality -- how does your energetic approach actually show up in day to day life?

Conclusion

If you feel disconnected to your Rising Sign -- you're not wrong, and neither is astrology. You just need to look elsewhere on your chart for deeper answers. There's more to the story. Your chart ruler is you walking that story in your own way. Your Chart Ruler shows you how the Character in your Rising lives, moves and makes decisions.

There’s something astrology apps don’t always explain clearly…

there is a difference between transits and progressions, and people often use the terms as if they mean the same thing. they don’t, but they also are not separate in the way they are sometimes described online.

a transit is the current movement of planets in the sky and how they relate to your natal chart. it is not the same experience for everyone, even if everyone is under the same planetary positions. what matters is where those planets land in your chart, what they aspect, and how they interact with your natal placements.

transits are often associated with timing, external events, shifts in circumstances, and moments where something becomes active or visible in your life. they can also show up internally, depending on the planet involved.

a progression is a symbolic timing system based on the unfolding of your natal chart over time. the most common method uses one day after birth equals one year of life. this does not describe the actual sky, but a gradual development of your chart as a symbolic reflection of inner growth.

your progressed Moon changes signs roughly every two to three years, which often reflects shifts in emotional needs and focus. your progressed Sun moves about one degree per year, which reflects gradual changes in identity, direction, and life emphasis.

progressions are often experienced more internally, as changes in what feels important, what you are ready for, or how your sense of self evolves over time.

confusion happens when people feel an internal shift and only look to transits for explanation. sometimes transits do explain it, but sometimes the clearest layer is progression, especially when the change feels slower, more personal, and less tied to an external event.

a useful way to think about it is this

• transits relate to timing and activation of experience

• progressions relate to longer term development and internal evolution

in practice, astrologers usually read them together rather than treating them as separate causes. they are overlapping layers of the same lived experience, not competing explanations.

Mars Opposing Pluto Celebrities

Celebrities with Mars opposite Pluto in their birth chart can deal with issues surrounding power and control. They have inner conflicts around power, control, and how they use their energy. The Journey Between What Was and What’s Next

So a little transparency post.

Right now, I’m at a transitional point in my life, and I love learning more and more about astrology because I realised how practical and fundamental it is in helping me understand myself better. I’m currently trying to really investigate and learn all there is about how each house manifests, looking into deeper interpretations of what we can learn about each part of life through the houses.

Lately, I’ve been exploring the 1st House with a lot of focus on the Ascendant. We already know that the Ascendant represents the lens through which we experience the world, so I won't get into detail about what it means assuming that we all know but nevertheless, I was looking into text and work from Howard Sasportas and I really love his perspective of the Ascendent describing it as the "maze" we navigate, which also holds clues to finding our way out. Out to greatness, and out to our sun, where we shine.

For example, as a Scorpio Ascendant, which you probably guessed, the moment I mentioned (investigate). I know there’s an association with uncovering truth. I have always been about trying to find out how things work and digging deeper, uncovering doors that people would rather leave closed.

The lens through which I see the world can sometimes be of depth, sometimes secrecy, but most importantly, it's through transformation. For me, my path involves, investigating my own inner fears and shadows, bringing them to the surface and then truly transforming by letting go of habits that no longer serve me and coming face to face with my own devil.

Doing so requires me to go deeper, to surrender and let go of control and trusting that things will work out for me, and that sometimes, things need to be destroyed so that you can rebuild.

There's a connection there, between the Ascendant and how we experience new beginnings —not just literal birth but every new phase, chapter, or transition in life will bring about or evoke the Ascendent. In the book, "The Houses" he suggests that early life experiences, particularly around birth, set the tone for how we approach these moments. For example, Capricorn/Saturn Ascendants may feel cautious or hesitant, rooted in early struggles or responsibilities tied to Saturnian energy.

Scorpio Rising on the other hand, are often marked by physical, emotional, or situational crises—a dramatic or difficult entrance into the world, may approach things with suspicion, lack of trust and the need to control everything.

I thought this was fascinating, and went to investigate and uncovered that during my birth, there was a real tussle between life and death for both my mother and me. When the doctors were delivering me, I was breached so they had to do a Emergency C section then things were going wrong and my heartbeat was raised, the process was so frantic that they accidentally dislocated my shoulder as i was being pulled out. My first baby pictures shows me in the hospital wearing a little baby sling. It’s fascinating how astrology can provide insights like this.

So for me as Scorpio is ruled by Pluto (modern) and Mars (traditional), both associated with transformation, survival, and regeneration.

Approach to New Beginnings:

Transitions for me often involve endings first—a symbolic death before rebirth.

Every new era in my life resonates with my instinct to dig deep, transform, and emerge stronger, much like the mythical phoenix rising from the ashes.

Starting this blog for me was really hard. IT WAS quite literally a tussle between my old self, thinking "will people want to read this, I'm not good enough or more knowledgeable enough than the other astrologers bloggers here and my new self that wants to rise into this new version of me where I am doing what I love to do. I snuggled immensely with cautiousness and inability to just let go and trust that it will all work out.

The Role of Intensity and Regeneration:

Scorpio Rising thrives in situations that push them to evolve. They may unconsciously attract or create circumstances that force them to confront their limits and grow.

Each new phase in life echoes the qualities of the Ascendant and the issues tied to our first house. These echoes are like subconscious patterns imprinted at birth that reawaken during transitions.

I just learned that Zodiac signs don't really determine who you are.

My fascination with divination and astrology has been a journey. Cause back then I've always assumed that zodiacs can determine one's personality and traits. However, I realize that I don't always show the same traits as my zodiac. I'm a Virgo, born on September 20th, and I'm a bit close to the cusp between Virgo and Libra. I do share some traits with the two. I'm a hardworking person when it comes to the things I do online and at my stadium job. But I also have an issue with overthinking and I tend to worry a lot. But the traits I share with a Libra are that I hate conflict, and trust me when I hear my parents bickering I just want to buy an air horn and blow it at them to stop the arguing. A bit harsh, but I don't want to hear it.

Now another person that I know who doesn't share traits with his zodiac sign is Anti. Antisepticeye was born or created on October 10th, which could imply that he's a Libra. However, his behavior and personality don't match that zodiac sign at all. People of the Libra sign are said to be harmonious, diplomatic, and of course, avoid conflict. Anti however is the opposite of his assigned zodiac. He enjoys chaos, never at all peaceful, and would definitely pick a fight. Especially with Darkiplier at times so it's not uncommon for the glitch to continue making enemies. Though in the eyes of Jacksepticeye's fans, he ends up being the most charming of the egos aside from Marvin and JJ. Cause everyone likes a good villain, and being charming is one of the many traits of a Libra. He also enjoys a challenge which is why when he comes across a new enemy, he can figure out their weaknesses. Anyway, in all honesty, he does show traits of a Scorpio the most. He's controlling, intense, stubborn, competitive, secretive, possessive, and of course mysterious. Controlling cause he likes to take control of others, intense cause he's a psycho, stubborn cause he doesn't like being told what to do, possessive cause when he's in control of someone he doesn't want to let go, competitive cause he doesn't like others beating him, secretive and mysterious is because of his past and that he is a demonic anomaly. But again he wasn't born a Scorpio, he only has the traits of one.

So whenever you wonder about your personality traits and your zodiac traits. Don't always assume that zodiacs will consider who you are. The traits in your personality don't have to depend on them fully. So even if you're born a Capricorn but will have similar traits to a Virgo or Gemini. It's not that big of a deal to think that you are a Virgo or Gemini. You are born on the sign you were given at birth but don't necessarily have to have the same traits as your sign. I can even say that a Scorpio would act like a Pisces if they were. And I'm not saying that cause they share the water element, it's just an example.
