Wednesday, August 7: Astronoid, "Drown"

Blackgaze came and went fairly quickly, but the post-metal foundation it originally built off of proved to be more durable. So while Astronoid got their start as blackgaze was picking up steam, their emphasis on space and melody over shrieking enabled them to carve out their own path over the subsequent decade, and “Drown” was a slightly more upbeat and energetic highlight late in Radiant Bloom’s sequence. There was a bit more verve in the drumming, though the textured guitars and ethereal vocals kept the track rooted in post-metal. It felt like Astronoid was trying to pick up the pace a bit, while still being content to mostly wander and soak in the scenery, and “Drown” was quite effective in feeling like it was both moving and taking in vibes.
