UP AstroSoc Holds Outreach at My Children’s House of Hope
The members of the University of the Philippines Astronomical society conducted an astronomy outreach program to the Deaf students of My Children’s House of Hope in Tandang Sora, Quezon City, Philippines. The group composed of 16 student volunteers and 2 sign language translators helped in the event. There were 30 Grades 1-3 Deaf students who participated the program. The event was composed of a lecture and a series of activities. During the Solar System lecture, the students got the chance to get to know the Earth and the other planets. They were able to familiarize the features of our planet using the UNAWE Earthball. Aside from the lectures, there were also activities like story telling about the constellation Virgo, light painting and sun viewing. In the afternoon, the children painted a representation of the Solar System on the walls of their school. My Children’s House of Hope is an institution dedicated to helping Deaf children and their families in the Payatas dumpsite area. Further astronomy outreach activities for the school will be discussed by the group and the institution to enhance the astronomy and science resources for the deaf students of Payatas.

PERSEID METEOR SHOWER THIS AUGUST 2014
Starburst!
Last May 26-28, the University of the Philippines Astronomical Society (UP AstroSoc) held its first astronomy workshop for kids, Starburst!
Starburst is an educational project of UP AstroSoc for children to learn more about astronomy, meet new friends and have fun last summer!
On their first day in the workshop, the kids had fun in lectures about the Earth as well as the other planets in our solar system. The highlight of the day's activities was the cupcake planet making where the kids designed their own cupcake into different planets. Yum!
We already know the solar system. Now, let's explore the sky! On the second day, the kids were able to draw their own asterisms and constellations on a sky map. Also, say hello to telescopes! Our best friend in observing our night sky. Aside from making their own constellations, they were also taught how to make a telescope. Each of the participants were provided with the necessary materials and hurray! They've just made their own telescope. Congratulations, kids!
It's time to go out on a starry night! On the last day of Starburst, the kids were able to visited the PAGASA Astronomical Observatory in UP Diliman and meet one of the largest telescopes in the Philippines, Andre the Giant. As Starburst's culminating night, UP AstroSoc prepared light painting and stargazing activities for the children to appreciate the sky much more.
Stars. Moon. Sky. Rockets. Childhood never ends. Congratulations to Andie, Iya, Caleb, Shyla and Anton! Ad astra per aspera, to the stars through difficulties!
