Friendly reminder that "Briseis" is a patronymic that means "daughter of Brises" and "Chryseis" means "daughter of Chryses"
Some scholia of the Iliad mention that Briseis's actual name is Ἱπποδάμεια (Hippodameia) and Chryseis's name is Ἀστυνόμη (Astynome)
Ἱπποδάμεια -> ἵππος (horse) + δαμάζειν (to tame) = Tamer of Horses
Ἀστυνόμη -> ἄστυ (city) + νόμος (law) = Law of the City
Both names are also apparently referencing other figures in Greek mythology including but not limited to Hippodameia of Oinomaus and Astynome one of the Niobides.
That's it.
Another set of cousins! This time around: Briseis and Chryseis
The concept of Chryseis/Astynome potentially being Andromache's (step-)mother, according to Dictys
Have you made any ideas for Astynome?
From what I can tell, the one source she’s Aphros’ wife, Laceria isn’t referenced anywhere else that I can tell (free reign ig lol) and of the other Astynomes, I obviously doubt she’s the same person as any the others
The only thing I got is that she’d be from Africa, but it just makes me wonder where the heck is this island she’s from supposed to be lol
I am going to be honest, I don't have any 😭
She is even more challenging then Hedylogos and Phthonos because not only there is just one source mentioning her but we also don't know what she do. The only thing we know is that she is Aphros' wife, probably Aphrodite's mom in that source and that she is the queen of Libya.
I wasn't able to find the island that she is from kakakakka but apparently in Latin the word Laceria relates to the verb 'Lacer' which means "torn," "mangled," or "mutilated", idk what you can draw from that but uh... there is that lol. She could be a doctor (??lol idk??)
More art from the Big Wheel Of Characters! I speed-read Sophocles's Electra for that last pic, since I don't have a copy of the Oresteia.
