Kara Walker is one of the most creative and provocative black artists of our times. This enormous sugar sphinx was made in an old Domino sugar factory in the Bronx. “The Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby” as it’s titled, seemed appropriate to post tonight. Google her for more of her works and to learn more. #karawalker 🖤 Repost @turnerdouglas ・・・ Kara Walker's "A Subtlety" never forgetting, five years on (Spring 2014) at what is now @dominopark ............. "A Subtlety (also known as the Marvelous Sugar Baby and subtitled "an Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World on the Occasion of the demolition of the Domino Sugar Refining Plant") is a 2014 piece of installation art by American artist Kara Walker. A Subtlety was dominated by its central piece, a white sculpture depicting a woman with African features in the shape of a sphinx, but also included fifteen other sculptures. " -wiki ********* Curatorial Statement excerpt: "If the racial and sexual connotations inherent in the sphinx and her attendants were not enough, Walker’s work is also about sugar and the history of its production and trade. It is a story of slavery and a triangular trade route that ensured a sufficient quantity of slaves, of industrial power, our contemporary culture of overconsumption, and much more. In fact, in researching sugar as she developed the work, Walker looked at thousands of years of history (as evidenced by her use of a sphinx). The heart of her title, A Subtlety, refers to sugar sculptures that adorned aristocratic banquets in England and France the Middle Ages, when sugar was strictly a luxury commodity. These subtleties, which frequently represented people and events that sent political messages, were admired and then eaten by the guests. Perhaps Walker’s Subtlety is just a little less subtle." – Nato Thompson . . @kara_walker_official @creativetime #karawalker #asubtlety #dominopark #lestweforget #neverforget #slavelabor #blackartists #supportblackartists #justiceforgeorgefloyd https://www.instagram.com/p/CA9PDDRJXF2/?igshid=7fvp8mvqvqum
