TABLET REVIEW TIME ERMAHGAH

Alright, for those that don't know I've picked up a new tablet, which is the ASUS VivoTab TF810c.

I held off on reviewing it for a bit until I've played around with the more tablet drawing function of the entire thing. Though I think I can share a bit on the setup as a whole.

As with many products, I think it to be wise to update it. In doing so it had become a slow and frustrating adventure for a full day or so. But eventually got to Windows 8.1.

Anyhow, tablet stuff. After updating drivers for the wacom portion of the tablet, I began doodling stuff. The pressure is...well, I'm not too used to it. It's supposed to have the same pressure as the cintiq that I have (that is 1020 pressure levels). For some reason I have to be much lighter on the pressure I put on the tablet, otherwise I get thicker lines much quicker than if I were doing it on my own cintiq. Thus, I had to set the pressure to be much more on the firmer side...and even then it's questionable.

Now, pressure levels aside, I do have to talk about the pen itself. The stylus is kinda comfy. Nice to hold, no real issue with the barrel itself. Pen nib is your standard wacom nib, so no differences there. The eraser part of the pen is something I don't quite dig. With the wacom pens I've held, the eraser part is loose, but feels quite nice when doing the erasing on your tablet. With this one the eraser is much more firmer than the wacom ones. It doesn't feel nice, and I wish I could get another pen that has a softer eraser.

Now for the tablet and how it handles the pen. Here's where things become a bit hard to give this thing good points While doing the pen calibration, there are certain points on the tablet that are very difficult to touch to calibrate correctly. There is also a ....I guess an inch from the top of the tablet that doesn't register correctly. By that, I mean when going into the little zone there, it ends up having issues where it does not stick near the pen nib, and in fact drifts away very quickly. The cursor also tends to not stick close to the pen itself when going a bit far on the tablet's left and right portion of the screen. In reality, there seems to be only a small rectangle of space that you can draw on that is well calibrated. A bit of a downfall since I feel much nicer doing drawing on the Cintiq. The tablet doesn't feel all that great. I've tried for hours one day just to do something great, but it's difficult due to the size of the screen (which isn't so bad, just coming from drawing on a 20" down to a near 12" really sucks), and the fact that drawing is a bit hard due to the jumpy cursor on certain portions of the screen. Not to mention, the pen pressure is a bit strange to me.

Would I recommend this as a replacement for a bulky PC? Not really. The issue is the specs since it's somewhat slow, so I don't think you could really do good intensive stuff with it. As a tablet though, it seems like it's pretty good. Long battery life (had a charge go about 9 hours) and the fact it is capable of doodling on the go gives this a bit of bonus points. Just don't really expect to do huge canvas works..or well you might, I can't actually tell to be honest. I'm wary of larger canvases on this thing.

I think that's all I could say on this. Either way, I think I will try and get more used to doing things on the tablet as far as sketching goes.
