If class 1-1 were to do a secret santa or a gift exchange, whoever Nirei gets, he would just know exactly what to gift them. Because of the info he always has on people.

Like, imagine he gets Kaji for example. He'd give him a bag of his favourite suckers/lollipops, or peaches. And the second year would be so confused on how this first year who can't fight knows he really likes peaches.

Or maybe he gets Hiragi. He'd get an album of rock music or silver accessories. Or maybe a can of black coffee, and now the third year wonders where Nirei got the information from.

LMAO yeah!!! Nirei would absolutely be unstoppable. I can imagine his friends going to him if they have no idea what to get their recipient. This also reminds me of that one panel where Suo is like “YOU might know them, but do THEY know you????”

Why does almost every character in wbk has weird or annoying devotion for someone? Their characters arcs are deeply attached to someone like sugi with ume / togame with choji/ endou and his werid worshipping for takiishi...suo recently has no character moments without nirei.... They are really one dimensional characters !

while i understand your stance anon i would not necessarily agree that this makes them “one dimensional.”

First of all i would like to mention that the show does not exactly revolve around most of these characters (I can’t really speak on Endo seeing as I haven’t read the manga so I’ve only seen glimpses of him in the anime) so they don’t even HAVE to be complex (im thinking specifically of Sugishita here, who I would agree—based on what I have seen in the anime—is a one dimensional character. However so far he is a very minor character so i would argue that there is no need for him to be that fleshed out anyway).

And as for Togame, although I do see that his attachment to Choji is in fact a major aspect of his character, I would not say it makes him one dimensional! I think it’s a tool for the narrative to actually explore his character and imply facets of his personality that can be inferred through the way he interacts with him. I can’t elaborate too much as I have not gotten to that part of s1 in my rewatch yet and don’t remember too much, and I don’t want to say anything incorrect, but as far as I remember we DO have other moments and scenes where he is portrayed as a separate individual from Choji. His relationship with Choji only elaborates on his character and personality.

And lastly, like i said, I can’t really say much for Endo as I don’t know much about him, so I’ll refrain from commenting.

I do want to add though that not every character is super attached to another character. Sakura, for example, doesn’t have any specially intimate relationships with any of the other characters (as far as I know) and he IS the protagonist.

ALSO, in general, character relationships are a HUUUUGE aspect of fiction—not just romantic relationships, but platonic or literally any other type of relationship (rivalry, friendship, etc.). They have always been a narrative tool to explore characters and tell the audience more about them, as the way a person interacts with those around them can provide a lot of insight into their personality. It’s not really strange to have close or intimate relationships/friendships between characters.

LAST POINT. For wind breaker especially I don’t think this is a weird or bad thing at all seeing as the major themes of the manga/anime kind of revolve around … people? Like interpersonal relationships are a major theme topic for wind breaker—Sakura, the main character, literally has a whole backstory about his exclusion and abuse by other people and his current arc thoroughly explores how he heals from that and learns to have better relationships with people. So it actually makes a lot of sense to me that wind breaker would emphasize strong character relationships like that!

sorry for the yap anon!! I did not mean to attack you or your point at all lol I just wanted to explain my viewpoint. Though I DO fully understand why you would feel like this makes the characters one dimensional especially if you don’t feel like they’re often represented by themselves.

181 chapters without a detailed backstory for sakura feels extremely wrong... Like the protagonist is mysterious!

I can understand what you mean! Though, in my opinion, I kind of like it. The way that we only have little crumbs of information leaves quite a bit of room for speculation. I generally enjoy these kinds of “mysteries” and I do think we will get a more detailed backstory for him soon, so I’m excited for that! I’m just enjoying the ride as well haha

Per your ask, I'll ask you this: if sakura had to kill someone to save the town would you it rather be Suo or Nirei?

AGHHH NOOO OH MY GOD…

this is insanely difficult cause. I DONT KNOW. on the one hand Nirei is just so earnest and genuine and like. hes so forward with how much he loves sakura and how much he wants to support him and help him to the top.

but on the OTHER hand, suo is like. like his dynamic with sakura has so much unexplored potential. like they’re obviously so close and they care about each other but suo is, as you mentioned, really guarded. BUT SAKURA CARES ABOUT BOTH OF THEM AND THEY CARE ABOUT HIM!!!

I think. If Sakura had to kill one of them I’d rather it be Suo. I feel like he would not be able to recover from killing Nirei like HE would die in the process too and as much as i love angst i do love sakura more and i dont want him to go through THAT much pain… like, it gets to a Point u know
