Got a nice surprise from @AtasSpeakeasy yesterday - a bottle of one of their takeaway cocktails: Pinnochio’s Conscience, made with sage-infused rum, Amaro Montenegro, Angostura bitters and Peychaud bitters. And yes, it is garnished with a sage leaf and a dehydrated cricket (Pinnochio, geddit?). . It’s quite a tasty drink, the sage notes are quite strong but the bitterness of the Amaro and bitters help balance it out. The dehydrated cricket is... interesting though haha. . Ok this is an interesting one: Shanghai Calling at Atas Speakeasy, made with ginseng-infused whisky and grapefruit with a side dish of mandarin oranges soaked in Chinese rice wine (mijiu, not baijiu). . You’re supposed to pour the oranges and mijiu in and stir before drinking. . At first the ginseng comes out quite strongly, but the whisky overtakes it soon enough and there’s just enough sweetness in the grapefruit and orange/mijiu combo to balance out the more herbal flavours of the ginseng. Been meaning to check out Atas Speakeasy for a while now, but never had a chance until today. . First impression was a little... disappointing. Place is nice enough, very rustic lounge-y deco, but I walked into a WALL OF THUMPING POUNDING EDM MUSIC that almost made me want to walk back out again LOL . Then, when I said I was alone, I was ushered to a set of two chairs by a corner that were kinda uncomfortable And made me feel like I was in a dentist’s waiting room. Place was empty so I asked to sit on one of the more comfy sofas instead. Phew! . At this point my head was already ready to explode from the pounding beats (I’m way too old for this techno shit), but I persevered and ordered a drink. . Thankfully, the drink was pretty good. I ordered the Como Antes, made with Captain Morgan rum, cream liqueur, macadamia, amaretto, egg white and garnished with sweet thyme. . I expected it to be too sweet but it was perfectly balanced, creamy and yummy. The sode of peanut butter on the side was a nice touch too. , Now, if only I could have enjoyed the drink without all that constant bombardment of my eardrums LOL I wonder if it’s because it’s Friday night.
