I think the Anglo-Saxon religion was already somewhat 'gnostic' in a lowercase sense, seeing that the material and the demons are overtly linked in the cosmology (e.g. Vafþrúðnismál stanzas 21, 28-23); consider also the concern for the mortality of the created world and on escaping the body for the Walhall, &c.. Would you call the Azteck religion 'gnostic'?

I'm not a gnostic in the sense of thinking the creator to be wicked or deficient, or in being frightened of the planets, or in being a (Para-)Christian. I am frankly unsure where Isa sits, whether he was wholly malign or had a benignity.
