I knew it. I knew that at some point, Callison’s album would link to Steven Universe Future! This song from A Picture Perfect Hollywood Heartbreak works really well with the current events presented in Steven Universe Future. Thank you, for this perfect collaboration between Zach Callison and Grace Rolek.
How it works, is that the song displays the protagonist starting to unravel. Now I can never guess if the couple committed actual murder, but clearly it expresses the loss of someone. For a while I thought it was an alternate personality of himself. But the death didn’t achieve what he wanted. He still feels as if the ex is still plaguing him. Becoming angry enough to the point where he threatened her when all she was trying to do was help him get over the ex.
You count in attempts to calm yourself down, but in this case it reflects how his anger is escalating. How he’s coming to the point he’ll take drastic action, even if he has to do it on his own.
In the animatic’s case, Steven is choosing to confront his problems on his own, while Connie wants to be there with him, to help him through the trauma leftover by his mother. She became friends with him by the allure of knowing he had a magical destiny. But soon enough, as the show progresses, she’ll come to see that it’s coming to do him harm. She knows that there’s no one left to fight, but there’s still some emotions to be worked through. I can only imagine how she’ll react when she sees Steven go Pink.
She was there, for the time of the flashback where Pink Diamond broke the glass, and when Pink Steven incapacitated all the controlled gems. She’ll immediately be able to piece it, but Steven won’t let her help. Seen in this animatic, we could see Connie start to fear what Steven is capable of. His unstable emotions are being exposed, the root being of his mother.
This animatic was wonderfully made. Fit the voice actors and their characters quite well ;)
