Asexuality in Film Episode 17: Little Sister (2016) [religion& asexuality; atheism]
One thing I’ve noticed about atheist characters is that they almost never appear in any form other than the Temperance Brennan-esque in-your-face rational-to-the-point-of-lacking-empathy atheist or the “ex-Catholic who’s disillusioned with religion” atheist. And both types of people definitely exist. A huge number of atheists are ex-Catholics, and a lot of the 4chan/reddit white male atheists end up presenting as the uber-rational type.
But the thing is that there are lots of other types or people who are atheists (and agnostics), and we shouldn’t exist just to be your morality argument or your stereotype.
There are children/teenagers who are atheists. There are POC who are atheists. There are women who are atheists. There are people who grew up in non-Christian households who are atheists. There are people who never believed in any form of deity. There are atheists who are forced to hide it to avoid ridicule or ostracization. There are religious atheists (see: Jewish atheism, Unitarian Universalism).
