one of the most interesting things you can do with a character is make them religious. there’s just something very sexy about characters who maintain their faith despite everything they’ve seen and gone though

Ibara Shiozaki Headcanons 🌿🌻🌿🌻🌿🌻🌿🌻🌿🌻🌿
• Despite her more gentle and pure nature, Shiozaki actually has quite the prickly backstory.
• Her parents were cons typically under the guise of quirk-activists.
• They'd get people to donate money into their "organization" without ever actually contributing a scent to charity!
• They had tried to get her into the family business young but she always refused believing the way they were deceiving people to be repulsive.
• Instead she turned towards nature, it having always been a safe place for her because of quirk.
• Eventually though one day her parents lies and money-laundering schemes would get them caught by the pro heroes.
• As a result of their arrest, she was sent to live with her highly religious aunt in the city.
• The is also when she became a Christian devoting herself to Christ.
• She wanted make up for her parents actions as sought to become a hero.
• Her past is a hard topic for her to talk about and bring up, so she tends to avoid it at all costs.
• She also heavily despises liars believing they're one of the worst people in the world for hiding their actions.
• Some people believe her to be judgy because of her devotion to her beliefs, but she's actually quite accepting.
• (Assuming you aren't trying to decive anyone)
• Enjoys baking and sharing her recipes (and creations with her friends)
• She and Reiko have philosophical religious debates for fun. (They classmates try to keep up but they became lost a while ago.)
• People think she's vegetarian/vegan, and she's not but dosen’t understand why they think so.

Oof developing Gwenevier’s plotlines and character arc and having feelings about the idea of her and Palamedes tripping into a friendship rooted in being outliers in a world that has mostly done away with religion. The overlapping shared values between Muslims and Christians and him being one of the only people who understands how much the failure of her marriage to Arthur is wrecking her and how scared she is of a relationship with Lancelot because as wonderful as he is and as willing as he is to humor her insistence on monogamy he doesn’t understand/agree with it—
and the crunchy crunchy CRUNCHY idea of the person who DOES—this Muslim boy who’s willing ostracized himself from the other knights because he will not bend to the culture around him offering her friendship and support without any romantic strings attached—
Yea yea true love is great give me more non-romantic found family not everyone who loves Gwenevier is IN LOVE with her
Arthur loved her romantically, but it’s faded with time as he’s gotten to know her better, they are too often at political odds, he loves her nostalgically, but would rather be with Lisanor/Silvia
Lancelot loves her romantically, and the more he gets to know her the more he loves her, even if he doesn’t understand her, he admires her, and will be her Happily Ever After eventually
Mordred loves her as the only mother he’s ever known—his first and final loyalty, fierce and blind and savage and dangerous—
Palamedes loves her as his sister in faith, even if they don’t agree on the fine details, he’s the only one who doesn’t have her up on some kind of pedestal but respects her anyway.

how to write religious characters
a.k.a mel getting annoyed because she can’t find any
ok here we go
the most important thing. DO NOT WRITE THEM AS OPPRESSED.
no seriously please dont. this goes for actual religions or whatever religion you created in your wip. im sure there are oppressed people in the world HOWEVER there are people who actually like being religious? *gasp* i know, it’s such a hard concept to wrap your mind around but im sure you’ll manage
another important thing. RELIGIOUS PEOPLE ARE NOT BORING
this is a stereotype that i literally CAN NOT STAND. we’re pretty fun people who just happen to follow a religion. deal with it. we can have fun. so chill out with the whole generic “religious person who is literally so boring and never has fun and spends their entire days talking about how you must be saved” it’s annoying and repetitive and if i have to read another character like that i will most likely die.
have them miss events because of a religious obligation
sometimes we have important religious things to go to with our families that we can’t just blow off to hang out with our friends. if you’re writing a religious character have them skip things because they had a religious obligation. it’s more realistic
there are religious people who are more relaxed about their faith
sure there are people who are super religious and follow everything PERFECTLY, but *shrugs* there are people out there who aren’t like that. there are people who only celebrate their faith on really important religious holidays and dont follow everything word for word. they’re valid. they’re counted as religious. and they aren’t any less of a (insert whatever religion name) because of it
have them get excited for big religious holidays
wether they’re actual religious holidays or one you made up for your wip religion (if it’s an actual religion make sure you RESEARCH IT FIRST) but yeah, we get excited for important religious holidays. especially if there’s a long wait for it. have them be excited and happy when it comes around.
WRITE 👏 RELIGIOUS 👏LGBTQ+ 👏CHARACTERS
no seriously please do. there are religious lgbtq+ people out there. write them as having an internal struggle between them coming to terms with being queer and their religion not supporting them. religion is for everyone end of story. (and if any homophobic people start yelling at me in the comments you will be blocked)
have them go against some religious code and then feel bad about it.
think inej ghafa. she feels bad for killing and tries to repent for it. honestly inej is a perfect example for writing religious characters so THANK YOU LEIGH BARDUGO. but yeah have that happen. religious people aren’t going to be perfect. they’re going to mess up obviously. think of how they would feel and how they try to make up for it.
this is already getting WAY to long so im just going to leave with this. it’s honestly not that hard to write religious characters. it’s really not. just write a normal character and then also have them follow a religion. really not that hard guys. if you’re character is following an actual religion make sure to RESEARCH IT FIRST. make sure you’re being respectful to people who also follow it. dont make fun of religion. it’s important for a lot of people. and maybe we want to see that in written characters. so umm yeah that’s it for now.
Obey Me! Characters VS. their biblical depictions PT.2
part 1
There is nothing wrong with a character being openly devout. It doesn’t make them a fanatic or a weirdo. For many people, their faith is a part of their home and family life. And that doesn’t stop them from being progressive or open minded. We need to stop typecasting devout characters as crazy or backwater. Hey, you would be surprised at how adventurous a priest is even capable of being.
