Persistent helot revolts end up sinking Sparta in Columbia’s Athens & Sparta. I played this when it came out, with the really problematic early rules set, and hadn’t revisited it since. I had been told that the 1.2 rules were much better, and having played a bunch of Hellenes recently I thought it would be fun to try it again. It does do a bunch of interesting things that Hellenes doesn’t, and is more of a tactical game so it’s in a different niche. Without the constant fear of losing prestige with each lost battle, you can mix it up a bit more which is fun. Unfortunately the build point system really doesn’t work that well - you have so many build points that you just rebuild all your losses every turn, which is a bit silly. Although I don’t think as-is it’s as good as Hellenes, I can imagine a couple simple house rules which might really improve the game. We’ll see if I’m interested enough to push on them 🙄 #bgg #boardgamegeek #boardgames #columbiagames #athensandsparta #peloponnesianwar (at Game Kastle - Mountain View)
