Thursday, April 11: Atlain, “Living in the Dark”
Living in the Dark was more likely remembered for featuring Chris Ephthimiades shortly before he joined Rage and powered some of their best albums, but Atlain’s first album was enjoyable enough on its own merits. “Living in the Dark” was fairly intense for its time, delivering a more frantic and turbocharged version of traditional metal just before thrash began to take hold, with Peter Müller’s opening wail paying appropriate homage to Udo Dirkschneider over prime ‘80s power metal. The song was somewhat like a Euro metal version of Judas Priest’s “Jawbreaker” (which incidentally was released the same year) and rang true to its mission even if it didn’t have the X factor it needed to send Atlain to the next level. As it was, “Living in the Dark” was a fun ‘80s banger that epitomized the development of German metal in the years before Helloween broke the country and continent wide open for the genre.
