backgrounds??? I don’t know her! but I thought for affliction we’d go for azula in that scene right as she imagines ursa saying, “no, azula, I love you.” I think it’s so intriguing and incredibly well done and I love this crazy firebending princess, so here she is.

PS: I liked my draft sketch of this so much better than how the inked version turned out, so it’s below the cut if you want to see that too/instead!

for every piece of art I put up, there is a sketch behind it! I draw everything at LEAST twice (once as a draft and once for a final), but in some cases I draw it out a few times to get the feel of it - like katara from yesterday was actually two sketches before the final!

@avatarinktober 2019, day four - journey.

so I decided to interpret this a little differently!

I cannot draw animals for trash, and my original idea was the gaang on appa. but I thought I’d take “journey” in more of a metaphorical sense. one of my favorite episodes in a:tla is the southern raiders, because I think katara’s journey is extremely important. we almost never see this darker side of katara, because she is so constantly having to mother everyone she travels with - which is why she couldn’t possibly have gone on this journey with anyone but zuko, the only person who can possibly understand her need for this intense revenge.

aang, of course, has been through it. he was frozen for 100 years and when he woke up, everyone he knew was dead. but they did not die for him - perhaps because of him, but still. different. sokka lost his mother the same day katara lost hers (naturally), but again, kya didn’t die for sokka. 

ursa, though (as far as we know), died for zuko. kya died for katara.

so this emotional journey that zuko surely wishes he could take, he gives to katara.

this darker side of katara isn’t a bad side of katara. it’s just a new side of katara. and I think it’s very important for her as a character, and she is my heart and my soul, so I love this episode, and I love this journey she goes on.
