Get Your Kicks

A westbound Amtrak Southwest Chief steaks along west of Albuquerque. This is where historical Route 66 crosses over the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. This segment of the ATSF was of the Atlantic & Pacific Charter, between Isleta (south of Albuquerque) and Needles, California, on the Colorado River. This charter granted the railroad direct access to California near the end of the 19th century. One image taken on May 13th 2019.

Westbound Amtrak Southwest Chief

This location is west of Albuquerque, where historical Route 66 crosses over the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. The train hustling westward in the late afternoon light is Amtrak’s Southwest Chief. This segment of the ATSF was of the Atlantic & Pacific Charter, between Isleta (south of Albuquerque) and Needles, California, on the Colorado River. This charter granted the railroad direct access to California near the end of the 19th century.

Atlantic & Pacific

Here is an eastbound stack train along the original ATSF—Atlantic & Pacific Charter, Western Division. The Santa Fe was able to use this charter as a way of becoming the fourth transcontinental railroad, completed in 1885. This specific spot is about four miles east of Thoreau, New Mexico, just west of which lies the Continental Divide.

Atlantic & Pacific

This is a westbound tank train, seen as the storm clears toward the east. This spot is along the original ATSF—Atlantic & Pacific Charter, Western Division. The Santa Fe was able to use this charter as a way of becoming the fourth transcontinental railroad, completed in 1885. The location is near the McCarrell memorial Cemetery, west of Chambers, Arizona.

Atlantic & Pacific, Part Five

This is a westbound tank train, seen as the storm clears toward the east. This spot is along the original ATSF, upon the Atlantic & Pacific Charter, Western Division. The Santa Fe was able to use this charter as a way of becoming the fourth transcontinental railroad, completed in 1885.

I call this shot my “final scenic” of this trip west. The location is near the McCarrell memorial Cemetery, west of Chambers, Arizona.

Here is an eastbound stack train along the original ATSF, upon the Atlantic & Pacific Charter, Western Division. The Santa Fe was able to use this charter as a way of becoming the fourth transcontinental railroad, completed in 1885.

A Return to Holbrook

I once photographed an ATSF local train and freight house here in Holbrook, Arizona—I believe it was back in 1995. So while in the southwest this October, I knew that I’d have to pop again and look the place over.

It was good to see that the Santa Fe freight house and former passenger station is extant, has been repurposed, and is looking good. There were several buildings in the immediate vicinity that must date to the 19th century.

In any case, this will be my last post from a wonderful trip out west for a few days this fall. I hope to make it back out, somewhere beyond the 100th Meridian, next spring sometime.

Atlantic & Pacific, Part Four

Here is yet an other eastbound stack train along the original ATSF, upon the Atlantic & Pacific Charter, Western Division. The Santa Fe was able to use this charter as a way of becoming the fourth transcontinental railroad, completed in 1885. This locale is known as Wingate, New Mexico.
