Ryland thinking Rocky is happy with being back on Erid vs Rocky putting on a brave face because he has to give 20+ eulogies and he's desperately trying to prevent one more by keeping Grace alive.

The first thing Ryland should do when he gets into his biosphere is run. He hasn't had to space to actually, properly, run in so long. Plus then you get Rocky being confused why Ryland is jetting off the second he steps foot in there. Rocky give tour! Why Grace leave! Where you going?

Do you think they covered up Ryland being forced into space until later when nations are inevitably at war and Stratt is on trial and things come up? Do you think there are audio recordings of Grace begging for his life and his need to stay with the kids that resurface later on? Do you think those kids, now teens or adults, hear those and realize he was just as scared as they were?

#and then even later when the beetles land. when ryland does the right thing anyway. they know he did it with them in mind.#I'm just imagining press regarding stratt saying “Dr. Grace made a last-minute sacrifice to board the Hail Mary”#and parents telling their kids that “Dr. Grace is a brave man who is going to space to save us”#and those kids learn later on that he was kicking and screaming and begging not to go. he wanted to help but not to die.#at least not alone in space without his kids. he wants to die 30 years from now with generations of kids he taught #ughhh thinking about it makes me so emotional #ryland grace #project hail mary #eva stratt #phm #phm book #phm movie #atlas's

I think one of the funniest things that book Ryland Grace does is continue to do excessive centrifugal force stuff with the ship after it almost killed him and he's just like "It's okay Rocky I'll just pass out. If anything else happens, you got this." And Rocky is never once a fan of that plan.

Ryland getting a little breathless when he says "I showed you a clock and... you're showing me a clock." really warms my heart because you know he is GEEKING out about communication with aliens and science and time and all that

Rocky's obviously known as the hero of Erid alongside Grace, but I have to know, is he a heartthrob? Do Eridians see him and go "omg Rocky 😍😍😍" "can you believe he survived being in an alien atmosphere just to save his friend?" "he named a planet after his mate, did you hear?" "46 years all alone! How did he do it??"

A detail I like about the end of the movie is how weathered Ryland's clothes are. His PHM shirt is kinda stained. His fox cardigan he loves has so much pilling. One of his shoelaces had to be replaced with some blueish cord(?). It's a reminder of how far he's come despite how "normal" his life is again.
