(#𝔭𝔯𝔬𝔪𝔭𝔱.) ¦ * ❝ let me (…) start here: i'm as cold as (…) i have ever been. ❞ @atlastatlast's NINETEENTH OF THE FIFTH, IN THIRD DEATH !
warmth clings to the panes in a thin, sweating film. damp earth breathes up from the beds in dark, loamy sighs. foxglove leans purple and poisonous in one corner; monkshood stands hooded and severe in another; bundles of drying herbs hang from twine above her head, releasing their bitter little ghosts whenever the wind worries at the frame. geneviève works among them with stained fingers and a blade no bigger than a whisper, trimming rot from a stem, turning over a leaf to feel for blight by texture, and removing it.
the smoke outside carries grease and splintered wood and the unmistakable sweetness of opened bodies. beneath it runs hot blood and mud turned over by panic. her hand stills on the stalk. for one clean beat she listens, head tilted, the whole of her gone narrow with attention.
the moment she steps out of the glasshouse, the cold begins to settle.
it lies low over the yard and the lane beyond, a white breath over the grass where no frost ought yet to be. the outpost has not burned properly; it has merely been mauled. one cart rests on its side with a wheel spinning in slow, useless complaint. another has broken open entirely, its contents spilt and trampled into the road.
crows gather in the yews at the boundary wall, black shapes shifting branch to branch with grave patience.
grief is for those who arrive in time to bargain with it. she moves through the wreckage with care, boots stepping clear of the worst of the mire, gaze touching details and retaining them. something heavy has been hauled or carried. clawing at the sideboard of the cart. blood cast high on one post and nowhere else.
────then she sees the other figure.
nineteen kneels beside one of the bodies. the dead man before them has his throat opened from one side to the other, not cleanly, and the dirt under his head has gone black. frost catches in the grass around the corpse in a brittle fringe. when nineteen speaks, the words are too plain and exhausted.
geneviève stops a few paces off.
there are many kinds of cold. chapel stone grazed by bare feet. winter air in the lungs before dawn. the chill in a room where blood has just stopped moving. the disciplined cold of a hand held steady over another creature's opened body. she knows them all, or enough of them to be difficult to surprise.
she does not know why nineteen has come, and there is not really any haste to find out. the dead are not going anywhere, anyway. what made them dead, however, has. her gaze shifts, briefly, to the wound, to the frost, to the pressure marks in the mud. ❝ then you must have lost more than your warmth, ❞ she says in response.
her voice is darkened by smoke, untouched by pity. pity is a soft thing people use when they wish to admire themselves. it has no place here among split harnesses, burst crates, and the steam still lifting from ruptured horseflesh. she crouches near the closest wheel rut instead, one hand hovering over the churned earth. the track leaves in layers. a drag at the edge. an irregular pressure. too intentional for animal confusion, too ugly for ordinary men.
the smell changes when she turns her head towards the yews. the taint she has been following from parish to parish and roadside shrine to roadside ditch. geneviève rises in a single smooth motion.
❝ i am tracking what did this, ❞ and that is all she grants by way of explanation.
another gust threads through the yard, carrying ash, and the failing heat of the dead. near the treeline, a branch twitches once without wind enough to warrant it. geneviève's attention cuts there immediately. the crows lift their heads as one black congregation. ❝ tell me, did it go to ground there, or did you watch it leave? ❞
