Current Project Update - ‘21.01.26 _Haptic Button

The project that I am mainly working on is what I call a haptic button. The project is based on a paper exploring the implementation of haptic illusion that gives the false sensation of depth compliance on a flat rigid surface.

Since it deals with physical UI, I’ve decided to use microcontrollers for the implementations. Although Arduino or ATmega328p is a great MCU to work with, it’s ease of use comes with some limitations. This lead to STM32F103C8T6 MCU.

I am learning a lot about computer chip architectures and registers, more specifically those of embeded systems. The timers and interrupts, and what lies behind the simplified statndard library of Arduino functions.

I’m planning to post a more enjoyable, readable documentation of this project later. With more pictures, easy-to-digest implementation details and tricks I learned along the way.

The whole project is very interesting and the prototype is very fun to play with. But as fun it is to experiment with the prototype, it is taking long time for me to walk away from iteration to iteration. As I am trying to explore ways to give variations to the sensations, spending too much time on one implementation is not working so well.

I am also working on a little bit of HTML practice, but the pace on this is much slower, almost non-existant. Still, I am keeping this project in the back of my head too.

SmartParallel: mission accomplished

SmartParallel: mission accomplished - finishing the ATMEGA328 based dot matrix printer interface board

It’s done. For now.

After weeks of dithering, I finally got around to making up one of my SmartParallel serial-to-parallel printer interface PCBs. I chose to solder the components – mostly surface mount – by hand and that went easier than I expected.

It’s not a densely populated board, so the size could be squeezed down a little. Still need to do a bit of post-soldering clean-up.
