On June 19, 1953, an hour before the scheduled execution of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, a crowd assembled at 17th Street in Manhattan. The meeting was sponsored by the Committee to Secure Justice in the Rosenberg Case. Despite the protest, the Rosenbergs died in the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison. For years the case was a cause celebre for the left, but after the fall of the Soviet Union, declassified material revealed that Julius was a courier and recruiter for the Soviets and Ethel was an accessory.

It's happening again.

I just dreamt of nuclear fire for the first time in years. Woke me the fuck up, lemme tell you. I think the testosterone is getting to me. It's weird, though... I tried to run this time. I never used to try and run from the blast in that dream. I think I've actually got a will to live now.

I have always had some sort of morbid fascination with nuclear technology. There was a gif going around on Tumblr for a while, with power lines and poles being vaporized in a nuclear blast. That clip is in this video, along with a half dozen other nuclear explosions. That clip, as well as the ones around the 5 and 7 minute marks, are deeply, deeply unsettling to me. Yet...I still cannot look away.

The development - although limited for now - marked a step forward in an international push to settle a decade-old dispute over Iran's nuclear program. Tehran says this is peaceful, while the West fears that Iran wants to develop atomic arms. The deal could also send a positive signal to separate, high-stakes negotiations between Iran and six world powers which are due to start on February 18 in Vienna, aimed at reaching a broader diplomatic settlement with the Islamic state.
