Krishna's lore goes so crazy cuz' what do you mean you danced on the head of a monstrous muti-headed snake, rebelled against religious practices of the king of gods and ruler of the heavens and uplifted a whole mountain to provide refuge when the said king attacked, defeated demons left and right and then went on to kill a tyrant, who was your uncle that imprisoned your birth parents and now you find out you and your brother are princes of a divine dynasty and you're only like 11-12 years old?!? CRAZY.

And he is also the most perfect, prettiest pretty boy ever in the whole creation, genderfluid pan icon, femboy, and lord of the universe- DAMN.

In honor of today, I'd like to take a second to appreciate one of my favorite [and incredibly transmasc] characters from the Hindu epic Mahabharata, Shikhandi!!

me explaining shikhandi's story very badly under the cut 👇🏾

ok so he was originally a woman named Amba, who had a MAJOR grudge against this One Guy named Bhisma (which was lowk justified bc he kind of kidnapped her and was also the reason why she was rejected by her one true love, thereby ruining her life. it was a whole thing), and she vowed to be reborn as a man in her next life so she could Kill Bhisma Dead. Shiva, one of the major gods, saw her dedication and sheer haterism and basically said “lmao ok bet. I got you”

Later on, after Amba’s death, this king guy named Drupada has NO KIDS and therefore NO HEIRS, so he goes begging shiva to bless him with a kid. shivas like “lmao ok bet. I got you” again, BUT he adds the disclaimer that his son “is gonna be born female but WILL become male later on in life bc I made a deal with this other guy a while back. you just have to trust the process” and drupada goes “yeah ok sounds good 👍🏾”

Eventually, Amba is reborn as Shikhandi, who was born female but raised male by his father, and never had his true sex revealed to anybody (not even to Shikhandi himself, which is lowkey funny and also real and based if you’re woke). His identity was only revealed the night of his wedding, and his fiancé- the princess of another Clan- and her father were infuriated at being deceived. Shikhandi, who is expectedly very distraught after his wedding quickly turned to disaster, runs away into the forest and finds a Yaksha (sorta like a nature spirit but think less fairy and more ogre/goblin)

Shikhandi vents to him and laments about how much he wants to be a Real Man and the yaksha guy goes “damn that sucks…………. WAIT HOLD ON. I’m willing to do some magic shit and swap sexes with you for a while if that’ll make you feel better” ig if you squint then the modern equivalent would be a gym bro lending a trans guy some t gel that’s kinda funny

Shikhandi is like “FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!” and becomes biologically male while the yaksha becomes female. king of the yaksha, kubera, finds out about this and goes “what the FUCK! this switchy bitchy shit is UNNATURAL!” because he’s transphobic and unbased and problematic medias or something or whatever, and he curses the yaksha to stay biologically female forever (which highkey works out for Shikhandi bc he gets to be a bio male forever now too)

Anyways several thousand pages later yadda yadda we get to the meat of the Mahabharata which is The Great Battle, and Shikhandi appears to carry out his destiny of KILLING. BHISMA . DEAD.

and Krishna turns to his buddy Arjuna and goes “listen dude. I have a plan but it’ll only work if you believe in trans rights. we have to bet on bhisma being a dickwad and then we KILL HIM.” thanks kanhaaaaaaa 👍🏾

and then shikhandi and arjuna successfully KILL BHISMA DEAD and he dies on a massive bed of arrows. yeowch owie ow! womp womp. the mahabharata confirms that transphobes die on the battlefield btw
