Wahhh you watched Elysium?! How was it and by that I mean the robots!! Lucky ducky!!
I absolutely loved District 9, and I think anyone who did will love Elysium a lot too. Blomkamp is building a really distinctive sci-fi style that meshes with me perfectly. Some common themes I strongly noticed during this was
-really cool and distinctive weaponry, ships, and robot design that hearkens manga and video games, but with his own personal aesthetic
-the main character being put through a lot of cringe-worthy stuff and being transformed (not as literal in this one as D9--it's in the trailer so it's not a spoiler, he gets an exosuit put on him and it's not just worn like a vest but actually meshed with him)
-big preoccupation with class struggles with a sympathetic eye on the downtrodden
-Sharlto Copley YES HE"S IN THIS I didn't realize at first and I probably wouldn't have even realized if I wasn't on his AMA on reddit today. He looks way different in this role. He's not a good guy (◉◡◉)
If you've seen the trailers you already know it's not actually about robots by a longshot, but they have a much stronger background presence than I imagine--they show up in a ton of scenes and are a really integrated part of the society he's built. And the worldbuilding is one of the best parts of this movie, imo. That aspect might be even better than D9, which did an amazing job at it to begin with. This isn't a robot movie or a mecha movie, but it's a sci-fi movie in every sense and even if you think the plot looks like a sort of cliche "get to the place before x happens" there is plenty for any sci fi fan to enjoy BY FAR.
I'm probably overhyping at this point so I'll stop, but Blomkamp has absolutely pleased me the second time in a row and I can't wait for his next sci fi project (人◕∀◕) I was extremely meh going in because of the trailer plot, but figured I'd at least like the robots, but I ended up liking almost everything.
