Pet peeve in fiction; blanket statements made about a character’s attractiveness in totality.

Example: “No-one would find him attractive with a nose like that.” / “She was too tall to be attractive.” / “He was the handsomest man in the room, in no small part thanks to his blond hair and flashing green eyes.”

Like, how do you know for certain that I, as the reader, wouldn’t find a crooked nose attractive? How could you possibly assume that I’m not into to tall women, or short men, or whatnot? What if I’m not big on blonde?

I can get it if it’s because a character is describing other people based on their personal preferences and biases! People can be like that.

But if you, the narrator, tell me that I, the reader, would point-blank find this character unattractive, especially for normal human variations and features out of the character’s control, then I hope that you realize I may become attracted to them out of sheer petty spite.

Uhhh tied between Kyle and Elspeth. Ohh my god and Sarah is drop-dead gorgeous. I’d fuck her in a heartbeat... minus how much of a lunatic she is. She literally tried to kill Maxie’s husband because she wanted to have him back after pretending to be dead........ so yeah, she’s gorgeous but also awful.
