I get super torn when I see those “you wouldn’t like someone as weird looking as this weird looking white boy a bunch of people think is hot if they weren’t white/male,” because my initial response is to be like, “ahem, you mean YOU wouldn’t like someone that weird looking who isn’t white or male; I have liked PLENTY of weird looking people in my time, many of whom were women and most of whom weren’t white.  And lots of other people thought these people were hot too!”  

Then it’s like, they mean famous people.  How many famous people can you think of who aren’t white or male who are both considered odd-looking, yet still considered hot?  I can count them on one hand.

Then I think, “well, most famous people (here in the ‘west,’ anyways) are white and they are, if we are considering all fields, predomninantly male, of course there would be more appearance-diversity.  That’s more the issue than appearance in and of itself.”

Then I start thinking, “you don’t think there’s some kind of different standard involved here as well?”

Then I realize I don’t have the social science training to examine these things further and don’t bother reblogging these posts with any sort of commentary.  I’m not going to try to pull the classic “I’m a latinx genderweird person, I’m totally qualified to talk about sociological stuff on account of existing.”  That’s just not true at all.

“Don’t make fun of the famous white dude’s looks because you’ll hurt his feelings” discourse always leads into “you’re damaging the self esteem of people who find him attractive” discourse.  Is that even a thing?  Are there seriously people out there who get offended because someone doesn’t find the same people attractive as them?  I guess so, given all those “what [picture] do [picture] you [picture] mean [gif] he’s [picture] not [gif] attractive?” posts.  Ai.
