Y/N drove into the small town of Standing Bear Montana, it was the day after Thanksgiving and the beautiful snow dusted mountains in the background, with the ground and trees turning colors were a reminder that winter is coming.
Tired of being stabbed in the back by friends and family, and the painful memories of her boyfriend becoming too much, she was starting fresh in a new town. A new slate.
Having purchased her first house, she was able to drive all of her belongings from her apartment in her truck. The big cities she’s ever resided in never amounted to anything for her. Always fearing for her life, unable to walk at night, or go to a gym in peace. Able to have a normal life without anything obstructing her to achieve her goals.
She was always drawn to small towns. Cute, cozy, and isolated. All she wanted was peace and quiet.
She entered the town, seeing the massive mountains in the distance, her radio blasting ACDC, Metallica, Skillet and other classic rock, alternative rock, and hard rock and roll music. It was her therapy session.
She stops at the crossroads in the center of town, just a simple four way stop as she looks both ways and being the first at the stop sign she crosses the road when it’s clear.
She spotted the small grocery store, she pulls into the parking spots off of the street and decides to grab a few things to eat while she unpacks.
Inside, carrying the small basket she browses the lanes to learn where things were.
She spotted soda, chips and even some microwavable snacks. Pizza rolls, hot pockets, and taquitos.
In the check-out she saw the news rack. Grabbing the paper to check in with the local news, it’s headline grabbing her attention.
Five killed in three days in small Montana town.
“It’s sad.” A woman says in a southern accent.
“Sorry?”
“The crime these big cities have, they just somehow find their way to our peaceful town.” She says, scanning in her things.
“Yeah, it’s one of the reasons why I moved away from the big city.” Y/N says.
“You new here?” the lady asks.
“I am.” Y/N says with a proud smile.
“Welcome to Standing Bear honey. I’m Diane.”
“Hello Diane, I’m Y/N.”
“That’s such a cute name.”
“Thank you.”
The small talk ended when it came time to pay for her food.
“Have a good day sweetie, you know where to find me if you need anything.” Diane says.
“Thank you so much for the offer, I’ll keep it in mind.” Y/N says, waving at her as she left.
Y/N grabbed her keys from her pocket unlocking her truck.
“Hey, get back here you little twerp!” she heard the commotion nearby.
She saw a boy, probably in his young teens running with a woman’s purse.
Y/N not one to get involved could see the law enforcement struggling a little.
The boy had moved some shelving for a small market down, produce and other fruits and veggies fell all over the sidewalk and road.
The officer running, tried to jump to dodge but the action the boy did was too sudden, and he tripped on the shelving falling to the ground with a hard fall.
Y/N decided a little good Samaritan wouldn’t hurt.
She steps out acting as if to walk to the other side of her truck and pulls the cartoon inspired tactic of stepping her foot out enough to cause the boy to trip and fall. Dropping the purse.
Y/N grabbed the boy by his arm and picked up the purse with her free hand and walked him to the officer who was standing up from his fall.
“Thank you ma’am.” The officer pants.
“Just being a good Samaritan officer…”
“Winchester, Sheriff Dean Winchester.” He pants.
“Oh, sorry, Sheriff Winchester.” She says.
She did everything in her power to not get distracted with how handsome he was. A well-groomed and managed beard, the typical cowboy hat, winter gear to protect himself from the cold. He was dressed pretty casual for a sheriff. Jeans, cowboy boots, a denim fleece coat.
“Ah," he waves her apology off. "It's fine."
"Hands behind your back boy.” Dean ordered.
The boy gave the adults the stink eye.
“Don’t give us that look young man, you did this to your own damn self.” Y/N says. As the boy brought his hands up to his head and turned around for Dean to cuff him.
“That’s right. Not only will you be charged with theft, but evading police, assault on a police officer, you got quiet the rep-sheet my dude.”
“So, what, it’s not like it matters.”
“Not with that attitude it’s won’t.” Y/N says. “I suggest changing up your attitude or you’ll be spending more of your life in jail than out here.”
“Oh, what would you know skank!” the boy cursed. Causing Dean to lash out, causing the boy to grunt in slight discomfort.
“Hey, that’s not respectful.” Dean shouts.
But the words the boy said got to Y/N when she tried so hard to not let it get to her.
Dean had him cuffed when he noticed Y/N walking off to her truck. He took a look at her plates, planning on finding her later.
“Aw, looks like I hurt her feelings.” The boy sneers.
“You’re lucky you’re a minor kid.” Dean growls. As he hauls the kid off to his office.
Y/N sat in her new and empty home, unboxing her belongings trying to flush out the emotions that were overwhelming her.
Y/N’s family had a knack for pushing her to her limits, both mentally and physically. She was the youngest of three boys. The oldest having been the golden child, golden student, everyone’s favorite. Her second brother, the troublemaker along with the third brother. Both always got themselves into trouble. Her oldest brother was the one teaching her how to drive, cook, clean while her parents harshly criticized. Her oldest brother would always fight for her. They never tried to be parents. He was always the parent.
When she graduated high school, he got into a car accident, the other driver was drunk. Y/N stayed at his bedside while his family did nothing. They never visited, Y/N couldn’t plan the funeral despite being 18. Her parents wanted nothing to do with their kids after they all graduated.
Her other brothers got into more trouble than she can count. She knew it was because of their brother’s death. One drank himself to death, died of alcohol poisoning. The other was shanked in prison. She tried like hell to save him in the first place. But you can’t save someone who doesn’t want to be saved.
“You keep this up, you won’t get out and live a life that Jason would want you to live.” Y/N said to her brother over the phone in the visiting room.
“What would you know?” he shouted. “You’re not him. He’s dead, he’s never coming back.”
“But doing this isn’t going to bring him back either.” y/n argued.
“I don’t fucking care anymore. My brothers are all gone, mom and dad never wanted to have us. Jason raised all of us without their help. What am I supposed to do now?”
“I’m still here Joey. I’m still here. I may be younger, but I can help you. You need a support group, a team. There’s nothing wrong with having a team of one.”
He gave up on the conversation. “Just, leave Y/N. Have a good life.”
“Joey!” Y/N screamed. “Listen to me, you can get out of here, you just have to do what’s right. Please! You’re the only family I have left!”
The guard had taken him away back to his cell. And it wasn’t until later that night she got the dreaded call that he was stabbed to death in his cell during a prison fight.
Tears began to surface as she worked her belongings out of the box, emptying it entirely. She takes a swig of her soda. Staying away from drinking alcohol, she has been three years sober, and she wants to keep that streak going.
There was a knock at her door.
She got up from the wooden floor to answer it. Seeing out of the entry door’s window she noticed the man standing there.
“Sheriff Winchester?” she asks, opening the door. “What brings you here?”
“Came to check on you, you seemed upset when you left.”
“Oh, I’m fine.”
“Mmhmm, yeah you are.” He says not believing a word of it. “Those tears say otherwise.” He adds.
“Shit.” She curses wiping the tears away. Making Dean chuckle.
“So, I hear your new to Standing Bear.”
“I guess that small town gossip is getting around.” Y/N jokes.
“Oh, that’s only half of it.” Dean says. “This town will soon learn everything from birthdays to your past life. It’s a blessing and a curse.”
“Yikes.” Y/N cringes.
“Yeah.” Dean agrees. “So, what brings you to our cozy little corner of the rocky mountains?”
“Just trying to make a fresh start. The big city was just…not my thing.” She says.
“Yeah, that seems to be a trend around here.”
“So how long have you been a cop?”
“Oh, it’s been…” Dean exaggerates a breath, trying to think back on how long it’s been. “Fifteen years or so, I’ve only been sheriff for a year now.”
“Well, you look good for a sheriff.” She says. But turning bright red when she realized what she just said. “I, uh, mean you look so young…” She turns even brighter. Making Dean belt out laughing.
“Shit, that doesn’t sound right either.” Y/N curses.
“It’s alright, I’ll take it.” Dean says.
“Well, come in so you don’t freeze out there.” Y/N gestures him to enter. Dean generously taking the offer.
“Getting settled in?”
Y/N nods. “Yeah, just…trying to get things in order before moving the rest in.”
“You’d want to move the big stuff first before you do the little stuff.” Dean suggests. “Do you need help?”
“I—”
“And if you say you’re fine, I swear to god—”
“Okay, I may need muscles to get my furniture in here.” Y/N says giggling. Dean smiling.
Dean pitched a helping hand, doing the heavy lifting.
Y/N lent a hand to help lift the couches, chairs and even the bed and bedframe into the house.
Dean’s cellphone rang while he was finishing up.
“Shit, I need to get going.” He says.
“It’s okay, I hope I didn’t take you away from someone important.”
“Just my son, I left him with a babysitter. I need to let my babysitter go home.”
“Oh, yeah, go. I can handle the rest of this.” Y/N says. “Thank you so much for your help though Officer Winchester.”
“Just call me Dean.” He says, answering his cell.
“Hey Jocelyn, I’m sorry. I was helping someone move in.” He tells her.
Y/N waved him away, Dean waving back with a smile.
She shut the door behind him while he talked on the phone, hurrying home. Y/N finished unpacking and moved the furniture around to where she likes it.
