the Horror skelebros final colored redesign~

aesthetic consideration includes the implications of post-apocalyptic famine and a deteriorated society with next to no remaining structure (Mad Max styling was a big play); necessities for a cold environment; the lack of clothing to replace as their size shifted and as their clothes got damaged.

in this setting, i pictured what eventually remained of Snowdin banded together - scraping food and skills and magic resources where possible, and living outside of Undyne’s reach - something of a refuge for those she’d otherwise have dusted. Sans is a very literal sentry, but against other monsters who’d harm Pap or their small community. Pap is a trapper for what animals do exist Underground, as well as looking after some patchy crops that manage to grow in a cave close to the Ruins.

... both are the most effective protectors of Snowdin, and will kill anyone too dangerous or close to their reclusive community. Sans, his mind slightly unraveled, is desperately trying to find a way to stabilize the shattering souls of monsters kileld long enough to extract life-saving magic.

Pap’s condition worsens every year, and across the board it’s too valuable a resource. when Papyrus tried to protest Undyne’s madness, she nearly killed him - would have, if Papyrus wasn’t so sturdy, and if Sans hadn’t shown up in the nick of time. Sans ended up taking Undyne’s arm in the process of protecting Pap, as well as sustaining his own head injury.

Pap’s skull was nearly split in two, and when Sans sought Alphys’ help out of desperation to stabilize his brother since he was too grievously wounded to do so himself, Alphys (already mad herself, and under Undyne’s influence) used metal plating to hinge Pap’s jaw back into place... but it went awry, and Pap cannot easily open his mouth. when Sans passed out thanks to his wounds, Alphys attached the bladed mask to his face as retribution for hurting Undyne - and nothing but an extreme amount of magic could undo it. nowadays Pap is mute, communicating only in sign language, and Sans is still stuck in the mask. Sans vowed to never be a part of Undyne’s ‘kingdom’, and to never allow her to get her power-mad hands on a human soul.

after escaping back to Snowdin, things devolved until the entire community was cutoff and was forced to be self-sufficient... to whatever degree necessary.

no human has ever made it out of Snowdin.

I just remembered that the AU starts in October and is now in December, and the redesigns don't look very fitting for winter so redesigns 1.5 for the season (I do not know how long I'll spend in December to January)
