Defeat. It tasted bitter, and hopeless. Since he had been captured, everything felt surreal. Being imprisoned, being carted off to his enemy’s home city…. and yet he could not deny that he felt intrigued by the prospect of meeting their king. Royalty of every sort had always awed him, far more than the priests who governed his own land. Even though he was a prisoner, something about being in the presence of royalty seemed undeniably glamorous.
As they led him before their king, his knees shook, and it was not hard to bow as he was directed. Terrified to address this being so mythical, so far above him in station, he stared at the floor, hands resting clenched upon it. But out of the corner of his eye, he allowed himself a peek. So this was a king! He was shorter than expected, and beautiful, possessed of a youthful form and face and strikingly red hair. He’d expected an ancient wizard, like a priest. But somehow, despite his small stature and youth, this man was majestic.
Without realizing it, he sighed. If only he had met this man on good terms in his homeland! He should have loved to get to know him.
