keeping up with the starks
Natasha left Barnes at the lounge to start getting ready for the drive up to the lake house. She was probably there every other weekend because Pepper got bored. Other times, Pepper would be the one visiting with Morgan. She said it was important that Morgan is surrounded by other people and not just her parents, which Natasha agrees to. She was growing up in a world that was different but she didn’t need to be isolated because of it. Pepper told her that sometimes Happy would take her for a drive. Natasha liked having Morgan around because, despite everything, she loved children.
The drive up to the lake house wasn’t very eventful. Natasha had sent Tony a text before they left to tell him that they were on their way and asked him not to freak out. I’m helping him with his memories. I’ll take care of him if anything happens, but I doubt anything will. Just trust me on this. Plus, Pepper insisted. She received a string of emojis as a reply. She didn’t bother to decode it, but she knew their night was going to be a long one whatever mood they find Tony in. The drive was smooth and fast because there was hardly anyone on the road. No one really traveled a lot anymore, scared that something bad would happen to the remaining people in their lives. She put on some music, not the classical ones now. She didn’t want to trigger him while they were out on the road.
Every now and then, she’d glance over to him, as if to make sure he was okay. She was worried about him. She couldn’t help but worry when the moment she left him for like three minutes, he started having some sort of episode. She didn’t know why she cared so much when their time in the Red Room had been a short one. It wasn’t a love affair that dragged on for ages. It was quick but it was full of intensity and passion anyway. Even when they messed with her head, even when they married her off, even after deflecting and hooking up with a bunch of random people when she was bored or undercover, she still kept their time in a box in a corner of her heart. Maybe that’s where she was in his mind, too, a box.
Before she knew it, they were pulling up at the Starks’ lake house. They mostly spent their time there these days. Tony was hands-off on all SHIELD operations and there were no Avengers to speak of. Pepper was trying to run what remained of Stark Industries, which was a bare-bones operation, mostly helping employees with relocating or housing. The world has gone to shit but they’re trying to live normal lives. Natasha wished she could do the same but there were people out there who needed them - who needed her. “We’re here.” She announced as she killed the engine. She could see Pepper by the porch carrying Morgan in her arms. No sign of Tony yet.
Natasha looked at James who sat still beside her and offered a reassuring smile. “You’ll be fine. It’s just a baby.” She couldn’t stop herself from giving his hand a small pat, again to assure him that there was nothing to worry about, before getting out of the car. She greeted Pepper and Morgan with kisses on the cheek and looked back at James who was still in the car. “My friend’s a little shy.” She whispered to Morgan.
