Georgia didn’t look up as the door opened with a jangle. She knew who it was. Besides, she wasn’t sure she could have shifted her vacant gaze if she wanted to, her sleepless eyes fixed unseeingly on a point far beyond the shelves in front of her. She was perched on the front counter, and Clementina the owl was in turn perched on her leg. Both her hands were fisted in a sheet of St. Mungo’s stationery.

“Sorry. Shouldn’t’ve had you come in. We’re gonna be closed today.”
