“Do you remember anything?”
His tongue felt heavy in his mouth as he tried to find the words. Before he realized where he was again, that he had ended up sprawled on the floor again, he was already being pulled up to sit.
Remembering felt like a flash going off in his face. White hot and increasingly uncomfortable. Every time he tried to bring his mind back to that place there it was. It was a wall of light.
“No. No, I don’t remember anything.”
“This has been the fourth time this week,” she said. She was digging around in her bag for something, making loud clattering noises as she pushed her hands in deeper into its contents.
“I know.” That he remembered. He wanted to say: trust me, if I could stop whatever this is from happening I would have done it ages ago. But the point was moot. He let his head fall weakly to the support his hand provided, propped up against his knee. That was the thing about whatever this thing was- it always left him feeling weak. And it wasn’t just the weariness.
“Here,” she said, stretching out her arm. She was holding a water bottle that had seen better days. “It’ll make you feel better.”
He frowned momentarily at the offering before sighing, taking the bottle into his own hand. He drank in silence, feeling less weary but no less weak.
“It’s not your fault, you know. Whatever’s going on- whatever this is, it’s not on you. We’ll figure it out.”
He was scoffing under his breath before she got the first sentence out. He smiled a smile that was not quite a smile.
“Okay,” he said. He handed her back her bottle, wiped his mouth, stood up. “You ready to go?”
“Are you? You sure you don’t want to rest a little-”
“No, I’m fine. Come on, let me help you up.”
Her fingers were unsure against his for a moment before she gave him his hand. He didn’t have to read her to know.
I don’t believe you. He could feel it as she stood up, getting settled on her feet.
I don’t believe you, as she picked up her bag again, slipping the straps over her shoulders.
I don’t believe you, as she took a few steps forward and looked behind her at him. “Are you coming?”
