Two down two to go! I'd like to thank Ghost Isle, as well as Matt and Nick to help make these first two recording sessions go so smoothly for my senior project. My first session with Ghost Isle in F kicked off my project to an amazing start; such a talented and creative group and it was a blast to work with them! I used the Royer Ribbon mics for the overheads on the drums, making them sound transparent and clean. Adding to that was the sm81 on the floor tom, isolating that sound to bring out the low-miss or the set. For bass, the bass player brought his own DI, which had an amazing characteristic sound and created a great foundation for the group. And finally for the guitar amp, we put it in a separate iso booth with an AKG 241 and an SM 57. One unique technique I did for this recording was use a room mic in the unused vocal iso booth to create another layer of depth and slight artificial reverb.
Nick and Matt joined me in studio A for our first analog session. Drums and Guitar we recorded to tape, using and RE 20 and Sm 57 on the guitar am and the Royers again for drum overheads. I also used an sm 57 for snare and a beta 52 for kick, fairly similar to my session in F. After that, we recorded bass using a direct input to the sans amp outboard gear, then finished up with some crisp vocals on the RE 20. Everything turned out super clean and crisp, and I'm so excited to get to the mixing process of these songs!
