Could you link some of the sources debunking porn addiction? Im actually really interested in your pov because from my perspective ANYTHING can be an addiction. Food, video games, weed, sex, etc. I do agree though that the people who hate porn always throwing out the "well porn addicts exist yknow!! Stupid gooners!!" Is immature and actually takes away the legitimacy of porn addiction.
You might be right about it being started by religious groups but idk...i can DEFINITELY see it being a valid addiction. I mean, there are people out there who spend THOUSANDS on sex workers and porn everyday, is that not technically a porn addiction? Or maybe it falls under a type of spending addiction?
Im not trying to start anything or argue dw, i just genuinely wanna see your side of things because i think its very fascinating.
Love ya ougi and i hope you're doing well king/queen!
this post has several good links and discussion around it
this paper touches on it too
honestly google scholar is an easy place to find stuff. enter "porn addiction" and see what comes up, theres a lot to read and i dont wanna put all the effort to review every one
"from my perspective ANYTHING can be an addiction" this kinda just defeats the entire idea of porn addiction. if everything can be an addiction then why is porn treated so differently? what about people who love to go on walks, people who like to play sports or music, people who like to socialize. im assuming you mean "when you get Easy dopamine, your brain wants more of it" whcih like, yeah. thats how the brain works, to define an addiction as seeking that out Too Much through natural behaviors and without substances that hijack the brain is just kind of silly and to classify these things as addictions is missing the point. its a very vague Vibes Based metric for an addiction, then you can have healthy addictions and unhealthy addictions. should healthy addictions as addictions? wait, then whats the point of calling things addictions...make subcategories of addictions? when does a healthy addiction go from helping raise someones quality of life to diminishing their quality of life? should we encourage some of these addictions if theyre healthy? this definition breaks down when you actually try to apply it
"oh i have a porn addiction so i need to stop looking at porn" in most cases, people have some kind of depression or anxiety, loneliness or neglect and they seek out ways to fulfill whatever is lacking in their life. some people get REALLY into working out, some get really into hobbies, some look at porn. its just a behavioral thing and sexual gratification is just one of the ways some people seek it out. there are a lot of studies out there that show people who have a negative view of their self have a harder time "getting away from porn" and there are also studies that show people who get a healthy social group and hobbies and have a more active environment stop feeling the need to seek out porn in general,
"there are people out there who spend THOUSANDS on sex workers and porn everyday, is that not technically a porn addiction?" this kind of sounds like a cherry picking fallacy cuz how many people who watch porn actually spend that much. there are people who spends thousands on car parts, do they have a car addiction? does someone who spends thousands on music, do they have a guitar and pedal board addiction?
the negative perception around porn does more to make people "addicted" to it than porn itself does
Analyses confirmed that the self-perception as a porn addict predicted distress one year later, where either porn use or personality characteristics did not. If someone believed they were a sex addict, this belief predicted downstream psychological suffering, no matter how much, or how little, porn they were actually using. source
i think its more helpful to say that people get lonely, depressed, dont have a community, and just generally can feel Unhappy or under stimulated. our brains are wired to want dopamine, and if it isnt naturally getting dopamine, it will seek out dopamine through ways it can control. make no mistake, we are not our brains, and we do not command our brains. at best we give our brains wishes and suggestions and hope that it grants us what we asked. food, gambling, porn, video games, sports, social media are common ways peoples brains get dopamine. and if any of these become a big problem in the persons life, looking at the symptom and demonizing the person for it, only makes things worse for them. you cannot hate your way to being happier, you cannot self flagellate yourself enough to where your brain is no longer starving for what it wants
this is all assuming that the people seeking out the porn are doing it so much its a problem in their life btw, there are a lot of people who watch it and have no problem with it
