I know we didn’t hear a peep from John Deacon or any acknowledgement of it from his family on his birthday which was totally expected and in his and their rights, but I like to think that the word got to him of all the love he was receiving, and maybe, just maybe, he smiled for a moment.

i forgot that john’s quote about his birthday—you know the one—is not common knowledge and so when an acquaintance of mine saw my queen shirt and said “hey, it’s john’s birthday today, you know” he looked appropriately shocked when i replied “you think i’d forget?! august 19th, 1951.”
