I finally watched Star Trek: Section 31 the other day, and honestly the only thing that's worth mentioning for me is Virgil.
Because not only is he a goshdarn cutie, he's also from Cheron, that last battlefield of Bele and Lokai from the Classic Star Trek episode Let That Be Your Last Battlefield. Which happens to be my absolute favourite TOS episode. And gosh, I'm torn about this cameo.
Because yes, I hunger for references to the stuff I adore as much as the next fanboy, but somehow this also waters down the hauntingly perfect message of the old episode that the only two survivors of some stupid, race-based hatred have nothing left but the hate on each other, the very hate that destroyed their civilization (which is the very thing for which I adore it so much).
But then again, why should some additional survivor spoil this ending for me, when Bele and Lokai have never heard of him anyway? So yeah, I'm happy about Virgil, 'cause he's cute and a reference to an old fav of mine, and 'cause he adds some cognitive dissonance that keeps my brain active.
And because that's the ONE GOOD THING about ST:S31, I won't be saying anything more (except: I knew it. I fucking knew it. Right after watching the darn first teaser. So no, I could not get disappointed. Because I already had abandoned all hope).
Well, there's another cameo at the end and that was quite okay, so I'll add this one, too. As honorary mention. It's technically a spoiler, so Keep Reading at your own discretion. Before I will indeed never mention this darn movie ever again.
