Everything is quiet for a long while, except for the one or other soft snore coming from Jaskier or Cahir every now and then, or a muffled groan from Geralt when he turns around in his fitful sleep, or a string of mumbled gibberish from Angouleme while she is having a vivid dream. Milva does not make any sound at all, she only cuddles up closer to Cahir in her sleep for warmth. It has become quite chilly. Not that Regis would be affected by the cold of the night in any way, but he can faintly see his comrades' condensed breath and most of their blankets and cloaks are not well-suited for low, or even frosty nightly temperatures. Catching a bad cold on their travels would not be a good thing, and winter is coming. He should have brought his knitting needles and wool. Why on the continent did he not think of it when he so spontaneously decided to join the Witcher and his friends? One of the best decisions he has ever made in his life, yes, but he could have planned for his departure a little better. Well, too late for regrets now. Now he can only watch and try to keep his comrades safe.
He gazes around the ruin once more. According to his internal clock and the positions of the moon and stars, it must be around midnight, the hour of the night humans believe is particularly dangerous and filled with ghosts and monsters. It would be nice if Regis could simply attribute this belief to superstition like so many other man-made myths. However, there is a grain of truth to it. And, of course, there it is again, this movement in the shadows. Bollocks! And the creature or whatever it is appears to become bolder, venture closer to where they have made camp ...
