#HappyNewYear!! Happy New Year! Dressed only in a top hat and diaper, Baby New Year has been a holiday staple since at least 1906, when the Saturday Evening Post began publishing illustrations of the baby by Joseph Leyendecker on the cover of its December issue. The Post ended that series in 1943, but the Norfolk & Western featured the “new little chap” in a January 1948 advertisement. Baby New Year is accompanied by Father Time and his hourglass. The color advertisement expressed the railroad’s excitement about the coming year. The advertisement appeared in coal trade magazines (like Black Diamond and Fuel Digest) at a time when bituminous coal represented a large share of N&W’s freight tonnage. As “the carrier of fuel satisfaction,” Norfolk & Western made operations efficient and economical for customers, delivering coal to industries and heating homes along the line. Today, the #railroad continues to serve the #freight #transportation needs of American industry. Norfolk Southern trains transport coal to generate electricity and manufacture steel, as well as a host of other products essential to households and businesses—auto parts and finished vehicles, lumber to build homes, food on grocery store shelves, and grain for poultry and livestock farmers.
