Best Known Women of Her Race
13 OCT 1885. Austin Daily Statesman.
“OLD AUNT PHOEBE” Death of a Well Known Colored Woman.
Phoebe Townsend departed this life and was interred on Sunday last. She was 85 years old at the time of her death. “Aunt Phoebe,” the the kind old woman was familiarly called by all who knew her, was perhaps one of the best known women of her race in this city. She had been a servant in the family of Mrs. L. Townsend ever since 18[?] refusing to leave her former owner when emancipation was proclaimed in Texas. When “Aunt Phoebe” became too old to do general household work, her kind-hearted “ole missus” built and presented her a home, and during her last illness gave her every attention and care. The old negress had nursed every child in the family, and today they, with many of the childhood’s playmates, mourn the death of “Old Aunt Phoebe,” a friend in whom they confided their youthful trials and tribulations -- for what southern raised boy did not have his “mama,” the faithful colored nurse? Goodbye, “Aunt Phoebe.”
Headcanon #10
Wyatt often picks Phoebe up from work and they spend her lunch break together, eating something or going shopping and talking. Wyatt loves moments likes this since he feels like he can tell Phoebe everything and she will always understand him and try to help him no matter what.
