i think being able to predict the ending of a story (based on evidence that the story itself has provided) is actually a good sign. if anything it means that things in the ending had enough set-up and it can be really rewarding for attentive audiences. a lot of the time i find that "what happens" is less interesting than "how it happens" and "what the author was trying to convey, even if the actual events of the plot are more surprising on paper. an ending that carries its narrative and thematic throughlines will hold up better than an ending that was trying to be the most surprising/shocking thing ever written.
